A collision between a Subaru and a trailer hitched to a parked GMC 2500 on Chevigny Street blocked traffic for several hours on May 5. Despite a fire that destroyed the Subaru, there were no injuries to the driver and passenger.

A vehicle driven by an elderly man erupted in flames during a collision in St. Albert's Campbell Business Park Wednesday afternoon.

The 80-year-old driver of a white Subaru crashed into a flatbed trailer hitched to a Black GMC 2500 truck parked along Chevigny Street in front of the Mike Mitchell Recycling Depot.

The Subaru was engulfed in flames on impact with the wooden flatbed trailer. The Subaru was destroyed in the crash. The flatbed trailer was partially damaged.

“It’s hard to say what created the fire other than to say the collision resulted in the vehicle catching fire,” said Lt. Paul Barbieri from #2 Fire Station, who was the lead on site. He was accompanied by a half-dozen firefighters and several fire trucks.

St. Albert RCMP also patrolled the cordoned-off site, which shut down Chevigny Street for several hours until 3 p.m.

Neither the driver of the Subaru or his passenger were injured in the crash. The driver of the truck, an employee at the recycling depot, was at work during the collision.
