A depleted roster left the St. Albert Exiles on the wrong side of a 36-10 loss Friday against the Edmonton Pirates.

Exile Eric Wynychuk said it was definitely a disappointing result for the team, which struggled against a Pirates’ roster with men to spare.

The Exiles managed to open the scoring on the Pirates, but that would be about it for the team as the Pirates consistently overran the smaller St. Albert squad.

St. Albert opened the game with 14 players, a man down from a full roster and with no substitutions available. Wynychuk said he initially hoped the team would do well with the smaller roster.

“For the first 20 minutes we were doing great.”

Those hopes faded quickly however as the Pirates charged up their game, leaving St. Albert struggling to match them.

“They were just bigger,” said Wynychuk.

By the end of the game St. Albert had a full roster as some injured players took to the field and other players showed up late in the game, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.

The Exiles managed to put one more mark on the board, but it barely dented Edmonton’s sizeable lead.

The Exiles next game is set for tonight at 7 p.m. at the St. Albert Rugby club against the Edmonton Norwesters.
