PLAYOFF – Caitlyn Girard of the Bellerose Bulldogs (10-2) is challenged by Mikaila Kirchner of the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (5-7) in Monday’s metro Edmonton division three women’s quarter-final at Bellerose. The Bulldogs won 62-44. Today’s semifinal against the Ardrossan Bisons (8-4) tips off at 5:30 p.m. at Bellerose. The winner plays the Lillian Osborne Legends (9-3) or J. Percy Page Panthers (10-2) in Saturday’s final at 6 p.m. at Ross Sheppard. Bellerose was the runner-up in the last two division three finals.

Division one women

The St. Albert Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues can punch their tickets to the metro Edmonton division one women’s final by winning their respective semifinals today.

The Skyhawks (11-0) host the Salisbury Sabres (8-3) at 5:30 p.m. and Paul Kane (9-2) is the visiting team against the Jasper Place Rebels (10-1) at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday’s final tips off at 5 p.m. at Ross Sheppard.

Last year the Skyhawks knocked off the Rebels 68-58 in the seventh final in nine years for St. Albert High and it was also the first division one championship as a 4A team.

In the second of three 4A provincial rankings, the Skyhawks remain at No. 1, the Rebels stay at No. 6, Paul Kane dropped from No. 8 to an honourable mention and Salisbury is also an honourable mention after it was listed No. 10.

In league play, the Skyhawks defeated Salisbury 76-48 Feb. 6 at the SkyDome while Paul Kane lost the division one opener to the Rebels 67-59 Dec. 10 at Jasper Place.

The last match between Paul Kane and the Rebels was the Jan. 12 semifinal of the Paul Kane Invitational and the Blues pulled off a thrilling 67-66 overtime triumph.

The Skyhawks are 24-5 overall after throttling the Spruce Grove Panthers 121-42 in Monday’s quarter-final.

Every player in the lineup scored against the eighth-place Panthers (3-8), led by Teá DeMong’s 34 points, Kamryn DeKlerk’s 16, Annacy Palmer’s 15 and Bella Cuciz’s 13 as the Skyhawks extended their winning streak to 16 games. The last loss was 66-52 against the Rebels on Dec. 15 in the third-place game at the 37th annual REB Invitational at Jasper Place.

Paul Kane is 18-8 overall after Monday’s 69-44 playoff victory over the sixth-place Leduc Tigers (5-6).

PK hosts semifinal

The Paul Kane Blues are one victory away from competing for the metro Edmonton division two men’s basketball championship.

Paul Kane (12-0) hosts the J. Percy Panthers (8-4) in today’s semifinal at 5:30 p.m.

The league opener for Paul Kane was 92-67 Dec. 10 at J. Percy Page.

The winner plays the defending champion Spruce Grove Panthers (10-2) or Holy Trinity Trojans (10-2) in Friday’s final at 8 p.m. at Ross Sheppard.

The last metro banner in senior men’s basketball for Paul Kane was 2012 in the premier conference.

Paul Kane is 20-2 overall after Monday’s 97-68 quarter-final win against the Millwoods Christian Royals (3-9).

The round-of-eight playoffs included Monday’s 81-46 win for Spruce Grove against the seventh-place St. Albert Skyhawks (4-8).

Morinville men win

The third tournament title for the Morinville Wolves in high school men’s basketball was celebrated Saturday in Vegreville.

The Wolves overwhelmed the Ryley Rebels 84-41 in the fifth final in six tournaments for the No. 10-ranked 3A team in the province.

It was a done deal after the first quarter as the Wolves out-matched Ryley, a 1A honourable mention in the provincial rankings, at almost every position.

Matt Osunde recorded 24 points, six assists, three rebounds and eight steals in about half the game as all the Wolves logged lots of floor time.

The Wolves survived a scare in the first game against the Barrhead Gryphons. After thumping their North Central rivals by 40 points earlier in the year, the Wolves struggled mightily while using a variety of lineups before prevailing 82-80.

Osunde’s stat line was 33 points, nine assists, 12 rebounds and eight steals while Jacob Christensen’s contributions were 20 points and 13 rebounds.

The next game was 89-60 against the Hilltop Chargers of Whitecourt with ample playing time for all the Wolves.

Four players achieved double digits in scoring – Osunde (18 points, 11 assists, 10 rebounds, three steals), Christensen (17 points, 10 rebounds), Russ Foisy (15 points, five assists, five rebounds, five steals) and Evan Kohut (11 points).

The Wolves are 20-5 as the host team for the North Central zones March 8-9 and the winner advances to provincials March 14 to 16 at Brooks.

The Wolves are the defending zone champions.

Lady Wolves results

The Morinville Wolves returned home from last weekend’s Wetaskiwin tournament as the top team in the consolation bracket.

Laura Stalzer drained 15 points and Leanne Van Brabant netted 13 in the 67-50 consolation final against the Holy Rosary Raiders of Lloydminster.

In the 3A provincial rankings, the Wolves are fifth and Holy Rosary is ninth.

The tournament opener for the Wolves was the 57-51 loss to the No. 3-ranked 3A McCoy Colts of Medicine Hat.

The Wolves were down by 14 in the first half before closing the gap to three points before losing by six.

The next game was against the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles of Sherwood Park, 2-8 in the metro Edmonton division two league. The lead changed hands several times until the Wolves pulled even with a bucket by Jenna McKinney with three seconds left in regulation time. In overtime, the Wolves scored on almost every possession for the 66-56 decision.

Jordan Hessell led the way with 17 points while Stalzer, Abagail Davey and Alicia Dibrardion added 11 points apiece.

Upcoming for the Wolves is the North Central zones March 8-9 in Drayton Valley and the winner advances to provincials March 14 to 16 at Athabasca.

The Wolves are 19-7 overall as the defending zone champions.
