Golden Ring

Six teams are representing the St. Albert Ringette Association at the 34th annual Esso Golden Ring this weekend in Calgary.

The St. Albert Storm Breakers (U10 Step 2 friendship series), U14AA Mission, U14A Elevate, U14B Sabotage, U16AA Mission and U16A Royals are among the 173 teams competing in 18 divisions.

The Mission are the defending U14AA champions and this year’s team is 19-9-4 overall with seven returning players in the lineup.

The Mission skate into the Golden Ring with recent wins of 10-2 against Spruce Grove and 6-2 against both the Edmonton Elite and Sherwood Park Power in the Black Gold League.

In the round robin, the Mission plays the Eastman Flames of Manitoba, Red Deer Rush, Calgary White and Calgary Blue in a rematch of the final in the Michelle Vandale Memorial Spirit of the Winter Tournament last month at Langley, B.C. Andreina Carrero sniped the 5-4 overtime winner after Casey Houde knotted it at four with 47 seconds left in regulation time.

Merchants at home

Sunday the St. Albert Merchants kick off a four-game homestand in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Faceoff is 8 p.m. against the Stony Plain Flyers at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The team’s home record is 9-6.

The Merchants have six games remaining before the best-of-three west division qualifying playoff round after Friday’s contest against the host Beaumont Chiefs (26-5-1), the top east division team. The score was unavailable at press time.

The weekend started with the Merchants (18-13) three points ahead of the fourth-place Flyers (16-14-1) in the west standings.

The Merchants were also coming off consecutive wins for the first time since November.
