Today’s main event is the 2010 Winter Flip, the St. Albert Gymnastics Club’s annual women’s artistic invitation meet at its Riel Park facility.

The St. Albert club is also hosting the Alberta northern zones in March and the Alberta team championships in June.

The puck drops at 2 p.m. today between the St. Albert Raiders and Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at Akinsdale Arena.

In the north division of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League, the Raiders (17-5-6) are second overall behind the Lloydminster Bobcats (18-3-5) and the Rangers (6-17-3) are ninth in the 10-team standings. The Raiders are 1-1-1 in 2010 after going 0-3-1 at the Mac’s tournament at Calgary.

In the league scoring race, Troy Bourke ranks third overall in points with 37 on 16 goals and 21 assists in 27 games.

The top goalie is Liam Liston (12-2-3) with a league-leading 2.00 GAA.

Tamara Oudenaarden of St. Albert was named to the Canadian Olympic team Monday as Speed Skating Canada unveiled its roster for the 2010 Vancouver winter games.

Eight females and eight males will represent Canada in speed skating.

Oudenaarden, 22, is at the World Sprint Championships at Obihiro, Japan and was unavailable for comment.

Oudenaarden will go for the gold in her specialty, the 500 metres. At the recent Canadian Olympic long track speed skating trials at the Calgary Olympic Oval, the Bellerose Composite High School alumna was clocked at 38.89 for fourth place in the first of two 500m races. Oudenaarden’s time was later adjusted to 38.99 because her original time was incorrectly transcribed by officials. In the second race she was the runner-up with a personal best 38.78.

Oudenaarden, a product of the Edmonton Speed Skating Club who trains in Calgary, joins hockey players Jarome Iginla and Meaghan Mikkelson and curler Marc Kennedy as St. Albert’s Olympians for the Feb 12 to 28 competition.
