King’s line-up of Craig King, Ralph Killips, Brian Pfeifer and spare Elson Keown are the five-time defending St. Albert men’s club champions. King was also the fifth man for the Brier-winning Kevin Koe foursome.

Piper’s crew for northerns is Jackie-Rae Greening, Nicole Bellamy and Laurie Schreiner. Piper, Bellamy and Schreiner have celebrated four St. Albert women’s club championships together.

The A, B and C event winners at northerns advance to provincials in the fall. The finals are at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The St. Albert Mavericks 09 are seeded 12th out of 12 teams at the Alberta Soccer Association tier IV women’s indoor provincials this weekend at Soccer Centre South in Edmonton.

The Mavericks kick off their provincial opener today at 9:45 a.m. against Sherwood Park. Depending on the result, they will play the Northwest Peace entry at 1:45 p.m. or 5:45 p.m.

Sunday’s medal finals start at 1 p.m. (bronze) and 1:15 p.m. (gold).

The Mavericks qualified for provincials as the Edmonton District Soccer Association’s third team in the tier IV draw by finishing first in division 3C with 14 wins and four ties in 18 matches. Lindsay Hornung of the Mavericks and Allyson Fong of Revolution FC tied for the division lead in goals with 17. Lorraine Enge tallied nine times and Alison Johannesen added eight for the only St. Albert Women’s Soccer League team at the senior indoor provincials. The Morinville Ladies, last year’s outdoor division one pennant winners by one point over the Mavericks, placed third in division 3A. In division 3C, Revolution was third and Storm United placed fourth. Rounding out the league’s indoor entries were the Pink Panthers (10th in division 3D), Fury (third in division four Atterbury), Gini’s (fifth in Atterbury), Devils (eighth in Atterbury) and Kickers (sixth in division four Troy). The other teams were not eligible for the provincial playdowns.

The Central Canadian Sectionals for the 2010 CrossFit Games will determine who the fittest athletes are in central Canada.

This weekend at the Edmonton Garrison Military Fitness Centre, more than 100 athletes from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will compete in four varied workouts testing all types of physical skills. Thirty athletes will advance to the Canadian championships in May. Times for sectionals are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

This is the fourth year for the CrossFit Games, with 31 sectionals and 13 regionals determining 150 athletes for the finals in July at Aromas, Calif.
