The St. Albert Storm kick off their fifth season in the Capital District Minor Football Association’s midget spring league in Saturday’s jamboree at Spruce Grove.

In the tier I/II bracket, the Storm huddle up against the Parkland Outlaws at noon, Edmonton Mustangs at 1 p.m., Battle River Shock at 3 p.m. and Sherwood Park Wolverines at 4 p.m.

Two fields will be split in half to accommodate four controlled scrimmages. Play will begin on the 40-yard lines and each team gets 21 offensive plays, split into eight, eight and five plays, respectively per sequence. No blitzing will be allowed (seven in the box). After a touchdown or turnover (blown dead immediately), the ball returns to the 40. There will be officials on the field, but no stick crews or announcers. Admission is $5.

This year the league is fielding 11 teams — seven in the upper tier and four in the lower tier. Each team plays six games in the regular season and all but one will get at least one playoff game.

The Storm are the defending tier III champions.

The St. Albert LunaChix returned home from the Ringette Alberta petite B provincials with bronze medals.

In Sunday’s playoff at Medicine Hat, the LunaChix battled back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Medicine Hat Wild Thangs 6-3 for the bronze.

In the round robin the LunaChix finished first in their pool with wins of 6-4 over the Fort McMurray Ice Melters, 8-2 over the Medicine Hat Fusion and settled for a 3-3 tie against the Red Deer Bling after five minutes of overtime.

In the semifinals the zone 5 U12 champions lost 5-3 to Lacombe Flex, who they tied once and beat twice in the regular season. Lacombe went on to beat Red Deer for the gold.

The St. Albert Mavericks 09 finished eighth out of 12 teams at the Alberta Soccer Association tier IV women’s indoor provincials in Edmonton.

In Sunday’s seventh/eighth game, the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League team lost 3-1 to Original Joes Crew from the Northwest Peace. The Mavericks were seeded 12th and the Crew were the sixth seed in the tournament draw.

In pool play, the Mavericks lost 5-2 to the Sherwood Park Chasers (fourth seed) and won 3-0 over the Peace Windows Strikers (fifth seed) from the Northwest Peace. Posting the shutout was Karen Seward.

The Mavericks spread the offence around at provincials as Lindsay Hornung, Lane Gagnon, Lorraine Enge, Alison Johanessen, Mel Bouthillier and Selina Vriend scored one goal apiece.
