Ashley Peters of Cardiff Echoes and Chelsea Stone of St. Albert celebrated a National Ringette League (NRL) championship with the Edmonton WAM! at nationals Saturday in Saskatoon.

In the final the WAM! beat the reigning NRL champion Cambridge Turbos 2-0 as Keely Brown posted the shutout with 25 saves. Amy Basnett and Jenn Hartley scored in the last period.

Last year Cambridge beat the WAM! 4-1 for national honours.

In pool A round-robin play, the WAM! were 4-0 as Stone recorded two goals and four assists in four games and Peters scored three goals and had two assists in three games.

In the regular season for the western conference-leading WAM! (23-4-0-3), Stone racked up 16 goals and 12 assists in 27 games and Peters notched eight goals and 12 assists in 23 games.

This was the second season with the WAM! for Stone and Peters after breaking into the NRL with the Edmonton Edge.

Peters, 22, scored 14 goals and added 22 assists in 19 games in her WAM! debut. She is one of 31 athletes vying for 22 roster spots on Team Canada for the 2010 worlds in Finland. The line-up for worlds will be finalized next month. Canada lost the 2007 final in overtime 5-4 to Finland in Ottawa. Peters was Canada’s leading scorer with 12 goals in four games. As the second-youngest player on the team she tied for sixth in tournament points with a team-high 18.
