First place in the north pool standings is on the line Tuesday, when the Paul Kane Blues and Sturgeon Spirits clash in metro Edmonton women’s rugby. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m. at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

The Spirits have outscored their opponents 100-0 in wins against the O’Leary Spartans and Fort Saskatchewan Sting. The 2009 metro premier champions and tier I (4A schools) provincial bronze medallists have not lost a league game since the 2008 premier final, a 10-5 victory by the Blues over the 2006 and 2007 league winners. Last year the Spirits whipped the Blues 51-5 and 48-0.

The Blues are coming off their second win of the season, 25-12 over O’Leary. Every player on the Paul Kane roster played at least one quarter. Five tries were scored and none were converted. Carmen Chornell opened the scoring in her first game of the year by being in great support on a forward crash ball. Shannoi Pinnock used her jets to outrun the entire O’Leary backfield in the second quarter for a try between the posts. A gritty effort by Krysta Florence to support the winger inside O’Leary’s five-metre line resulted in a score in the corner over the endzone post. Naomi Henneberry converted a quick tap on a penalty play after she was grabbed by the neck and thrown down. In the fourth quarter Sabrina Kelly celebrated her 18th birthday with a try off a five-metre scrum after some diligent crash ball efforts.

Meanwhile, the Bellerose Bulldogs will play the winless Sting at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at the rugby club. The Bulldogs lost their league opener 22-0 to Paul Kane and in the exhibition north/south crossover this week they crushed the Archbishop Jordan Scots 43-0. Janna Slevinsky racked up four tries and one conversion. Amanda Johnson, Dawn Kunz and Viveca Robinson also scored and Robinson added three conversions.

The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League (SAWSL) still has room for players for the upcoming season. All skills, ages and experience welcomed. League play in divisions one and two is expected to kick off May 16.

If interested, provide your position and the type of team you are looking for to Jeanet Moore, senior women’s director, at [email protected].
