Simpson triathlon
Sir George Simpson School hosts its 28th annual triathlon today with 160 students competing.
The swim portion of the race starts at 10:15 a.m. at Grosvenor pool.
Students swim between 100 and 150 metres depending on their grade, bike about 1.2 kilometres and run about 1.3 km.
Approximately 35 marshals/volunteers are providing assistance.
Tigers play ball
Tonight the St. Albert Tigers are the visiting team against the senior AAA provincial champion Sherwood Park Athletics in the Sunburst Baseball League.
The first pitch against the Athletics (2-2) is 7 p.m. at Centennial Park.
Friday’s home game against the Red Deer Riggers (1-3) starts at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
The Tigers are 0-3 (8 RF/23 RA) to start off the Sunburst season after the 7-3 loss to the Confederation Park Cubs (5-2) last weekend in St. Albert.
Upcoming for the Tigers at Legion park is Saturday’s camp for male and female U9, U11 and U13 division players and their annual tournament June 21 to 23.
Rugby matches
Weekend matches for the St. Albert Rugby Football Club men’s teams kick off Friday at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
SARFC (1-1) and the Parkland Sharks (1-0) scrum down at 7 p.m. in the Edmonton Rugby Union division two fixtures.
Saturday’s doubleheader times at SARFC are 2 p.m. for ERU division three and 4 p.m. for Alberta Cup premier against the Clan (1-0 in premier and 2-0 in division three).
Last weekend in Leduc, SARFC lost 36-24 to the LA Crude in the division three season opener for both teams and in premier the defending Labatt’s Cup provincial champion (0-2) fell 32-29 to the Crude (1-1).
Meanwhile, SARFC (3-1, 257 PF/44 PA) extended its Alberta premier women’s winning streak to three matches in Friday’s 65-15 thrashing of the Strathcona Druids (1-3) in Sherwood Park.
Also, the ERU division three women’s match Saturday between SARFC (1-2) and the host Lep/Tigers (2-0) was rescheduled to June 14 because of poor air quality conditions.
Soccer festival
The St. Albert Soccer Association hosts the annual season wind-up festival for its youth teams this weekend at Riel Park.
The start time is 10 a.m. for the Timbits Jamboree on Saturday for U4 to U7 players and the Canada Soccer Active Start Soccer Fest on Sunday for U9 and U11.
Organizers are expecting more than 3,000 people and the event goes rain or shine.
