Tonight’s doubleheader in the division one fixtures starts at 7 p.m. between Impact 1 and Chile (1-1-1) At 8:15 p.m. Impact 2 hosts Villa FC (2-2).

Impact 1 (2-1-2) is tied for third place in the 1B standings. Marcello Cimino leads the team in goals with four. Shaun Kelly and Daniel Pilon have three apiece.

Impact 2 (1-2) is two points out of first place as the fifth-ranked team in the 1A standings. Cohen Cassidy is among the division’s top scorers with five goals.

Impact 2 was promoted to division one after winning the division 2A pennant last year at 11-2-1. Impact 1 finished third in division 1B at 9-4-1.

At 7 p.m. Thursday the Impact Rangers (0-1-4) hook up with Polonia (2-1-1). The Rangers are coming off a 4-1 loss to Karpaty (3-1-1) in Sherwood Park. They kicked off the season with four consecutive draws, including back-to-back scoreless affairs with Dinamo Croatia (2-1-2) and DFCA (1-2-1).

The Rangers are back in premier after a one-year stint in division 1A as the 11-1-2 pennant winners.

Garrett King ran to victory in the 400-metre high school event at the Edmonton International Track Classic on Saturday at Foote Field.

King’s time was 50.06 seconds. Finishing second was Ben Ajugo of the O’Leary Spartans at 50.84.

Ajugo was the top seed at 49.66. King was seeded second in the field of eight at 50.74, set at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association championships the previous weekend in Medicine Hat as the Grade 11 Paul Kane student won the intermediate boys final. At the high school provincials the 16-year-old was also first in the intermediate 100 m hurdles at 13.53.

At the provincial high school zone qualifier the Edmonton Olympic Track and Field Club member placed first in both the 400 m (51.93) and 100 m hurdles (13.96).

Up next for King is the June 26 and 27 Alberta Age Class Provincial Championships, hosted by the St. Albert Track and Field Club at Fowler Athletic Park. His goal is to make Team Alberta for the fourth straight year for the Legion Canadian Youth Athletics Championships, Aug. 4 to 10 at Ottawa.

Meanwhile, Grade 11 Paul Kane student Rachel Francois was seventh in the women’s 800 m at the Edmonton track classic at 2:11.12. Jennifer Kemp of the Running Room was the winner at 2:06.67.

Francois, 16, was coming off a provincial record in the intermediate girls’ 800 m at 2:12.89 in the high school championships. The previous mark of 2:12.90 was set in 1998 by Tanya Wright of Beaumont.

Francois also took home silver from provincials in the 400 m at 57.68. At zones the Edmonton Harriers Track and Field Club member finished first in the 800 m (2:27.08) and second in the 400 m (1:00.71).

Her big goal this summer is to qualify for the world junior championships next month in Moncton, N.B.
