The St. Albert Soccer Association kicks off its 38th annual Canada Day Classic on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Forty-one teams are competing in the boys’ tier I, II and III tournament. The St. Albert Impact program is represented by six teams.

Games are scheduled in eight divisions: U10 seven-versus-seven, U12 tier I and tier III eight-versus-eight, U14 tier I and tier II, U16 tier II and tier III and U16 tier I/U18 tier II.

Field locations include the Riel Park pitches and artificial turf, as well as Grosvenor, Poplar, Langholm, Erin Ridge Park, Eldorado west and Forest Park north and south. The finals are Sunday.

Third division men’s rugby scrums down tonight at 7 p.m. at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

St. Albert (1-6) is winless in five games and the Norwesters (1-4) are last in the Edmonton Rugby Union table.

St. Albert is coming off a 31-10 defeat Saturday against the Clansmen (4-2) at Airways Park. Brandon Platten was man of the match in a losing cause.

Meanwhile, in the men’s second division, St. Albert (4-3) and Clansmen (3-1) battle tonight at 7 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park. The seconds are two points back of top spot after posting their fourth-straight win of the season, 29-3 over the Norwesters (1-5-1) Saturday at St. Albert. See page for 58 for game coverage.

The first of three losses in a row for the seconds was 34-20 against the Clan in the league-opener May 15.

On the women’s pitch, the winless St. Albert second division side visits the Lep/Tigers (3-3) tonight at 7 p.m. In the first game of the season, the Lep/Tigers thumped St. Albert 55-7.

The women’s second 15 are averaging 64.8 points against in five losses while scoring two converted tries.

The St. Albert Impact’s division one teams in the Edmonton District Soccer Association play tonight at 7 p.m.

In division 1B, the Impact 1 (3-2-2) host the Scona Blues (1-1-2) at Riel Park. The Impact 2 (3-1-2) challenge Punjab United (3-2-1) in division 1A at the Scottish Soccer Club.

The Impact 1 are ranked third after dropping a 1-0 decision to the division-leading Ital-Canadians (5-0-1) last week. The Impact 2 are tied for second spot after posting a recent 1-0 win over the Serbian Eagles (2-4-1).

Tonight at 7 p.m. the midget AAA St. Albert Cardinals are up to bat against SEEBA 2 at Goldstick Park.

Tuesday night they hosted Sherwood Park but the score was unavailable at press time.

Last weekend at the Peter Devries Invitational Tournament in Edmonton, the Cardinals lost their first game, 12-2 to SEEBA 1, then beat Lloydminster 10-0, Spruce Grove 6-5 and Lethbridge 13-4.
