Norwest baseball
Tonight marks the last Norwest 18U AAA Baseball League game for the St. Albert Cardinals before provincials.
Start time is 7 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Athletics at Legion Memorial Park.
Sherwood Park is hosting the Baseball Alberta Tier I championship Aug. 2 to 4.
The seven Tier I Norwest teams – Parkland Twins (26-4), Cardinals (24-7), Calgary Bandits (19-11) Sherwood Park (15-16), Red Deer Braves (14-16), South Jasper Place Jays (13-15) and Calgary Cubs (9-22) – will be joined at provincials by the winner of the Tier II tournament this weekend at Fort McMurray.
The Alberta champion goes to nationals, Aug. 15 to 18 in London, Ont., and the runner-up competes at westerns, Aug 16 to 18 in Red Deer.
The Cardinals, the defending Tier I champions, were winners of eight in a row, including 4-1 and 3-1 decisions against the Twins, before playing the Jays on Tuesday. The score was unavailable at press time.
Last weekend in Calgary, the Cardinals swept the four-game series with the Cubs 22-3, 5-0, 14-3 and 6-1.
15U AAA baseball
The St. Albert Cardinals close out the Baseball Alberta 15U AAA League schedule Thursday against the Red Deer Braves.
First pitch is 6:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
Upcoming for the Cardinals is the Baseball Alberta Tier I tournament Aug. 2 to 4 at Okotoks.
The Cardinals (20-7) were ranked first in the north division and fourth overall in the 14-team league before Tuesday’s game against the Edmonton Padres (10-18). The score was unavailable at press time.
The league leaders are Foothills Dawgs Black (29-0) of the south division and the Camrose Cougars (25-8) and Red Deer (23-6) of the central division.
Earlier this month, the Cardinals won the 17th annual Valley of Champions Tournament in Kelowna, B.C.
Impact 5 women
The next match for the first-place St. Albert Impact 5 division 2A women’s team is Thursday in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. against Rio Terrace FC at Coronation Park.
The last two Impact matches were rained out against Wind SH (5-7) and Dreadnought 2 (5-3-2).
The Impact (8-0-2) are four points up on Rio Terrace (7-2-1) and Sherwood Park Phoenix 3 (7-1-1) in the division table as the top two teams qualify for the playdowns to determine the EDSA rep at Tier II provincials.
