Rugby matches
Highlighting today’s doubleheader at St. Albert Rugby Football Club is the Gareth Jones Memorial Game.
Kickoff is 4 p.m. between the SARFC premier men and Calgary Canucks in the Alberta Cup north/south interlock fixtures.
As part of the Gareth Jones Day event, special vintage replica jerseys will be auctioned off to assist with scholarships and grants to SARFC juniors in Jones’ memory.
In round two of the Alberta Cup, the Canucks are 2-0 and 6-1 overall while the first match for SARFC, after going 5-2 in round one, was the 69-12 drubbing by the Rams (2-0, 6-1 overall) last weekend in Calgary.
The worst loss for the first 15 men in the SARFC modern era (2007-present) after rejoining the premier ranks in 2008 eclipsed the 51-3 beatdown by the Nor’Westers in 2017.
Last year SARFC overpowered the Rams 42-26 in the Labatt’s Cup provincial final at Calgary.
The first match of the day starts at 2 p.m. with the SARFC division two men against the Fort McMurray Knights in the Edmonton Rugby Union.
The Knights (8-1) have a semifinal berth locked up while SARFC (4-5) is battling the Clan (5-5) and Lep/Tigers (4-5) for the fourth and final playoff spot.
