Ken Ann Cup
Saturday’s provincial premier men’s qualifier between the St. Albert Rugby Football Club and Strathcona Druids kicks off at 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
The winner of the Ken Ann Cup north final battles the Calgary Rams or Calgary Canucks for the Labatt’s Cup championship next Saturday at 5 p.m. at Ellerslie.
SARFC is competing in its 11th north final in 12 years after winning its ninth Ken Ann Cup since 2008 and fifth Labatt’s Cup since 2010 last year.
Results between SARFC (7-4-1) and the Druids (8-3-1) in the Alberta Cup fixtures were 22-19 for SARFC on June 14 and the 28-28 draw Sept. 7 at Sherwood Park.
Raiders at home
Tonight’s exhibition between the St. Albert Nektar Raiders and Sherwood Park Kings starts at 7:45 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.
The Raiders are 1-2-1 in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League preseason after Sunday’s 2-2 draw with the Southside Athletic Club at Bill Hunter Arena.
Not dressed for the game were two defencemen, five forwards and two netminders. Three eligible players were also at junior camps.
Junior B hockey
The Capital Junior B Hockey League season kicks off with Friday’s home opener for the St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets.
Puck drop is 8 p.m. between the Merchants and Edmonton Mustangs at Jarome Iginla Arena and the Jets against the CJHL champion Beverly Warriors at Landrex Arena.
Sunday the Merchants play the North Edmonton Red Wings at 8 p.m. at Londonderry Arena.
Last weekend in exhibition action, the Merchants forfeited Friday’s game in Stony Plain with three minutes left in the second period because both netminders suffered injuries in the game and Sunday’s score was 5-3 for the home team against the Sherwood Park Knights in St. Albert.
Sabres games
The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres open the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League regular season this weekend with two games scheduled.
Faceoff times are 8:15 p.m. Friday against the KC Squires at Callingwood Twin Arenas and 2:15 p.m. Saturday against the SSAC Lions at Go Auto Arena.
The Sabres completed the John Ferguson Memorial Preseason Tournament with two wins, one loss and one tie at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre after Sunday’s 4-1 loss to the Sherwood Park Kings while going 3-1-1 overall in exhibition play.
The team’s finalized roster consists of four returning Sabres: netminder Luke Roberts, defenceman Ben Belyea and forwards’ Carmelo Crandell and Ashton Hutchinson.
