The 25th annual Lions Western Canadian Challenge volleyball tournament swings into action Thursday.

Pool play in the 12- team women's draw starts at 12:30 p.m. with the Morinville Wolves hosting the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans of Spruce Grove and the Skyhawks play the Barrhead Gryphons at the SkyDome.

Action for the 12 men’s teams begins at 1:30 p.m. with the Wolves versus Spartans at Morinville and the Skyhawks versus Barrhead at the SkyDome.

Saturday’s opening playoff rounds go at 12:45 p.m. and the championship and consolation matches are 5:30 p.m. for the women at Morinville and the men at the SkyDome.

The Bawlf Wildcats, Beaverlodge Royals, Bowness Trojans of Calgary, Cardston Cougars, Peace Wapiti Academy Titans of Grande Prairie, R.F. Staples Thunderbirds of Westlock, Robert Thirsk Comets of Calgary and the St. Joseph Celtics/Ceniahs of Grande Prairie are also competing.

Last year's WCC winners were Barrhead for the men in three sets against the Wolves and Peace Wapiti for the women in two sets against the Skyhawks.

At last year’s 3A provincials, Peace Wapiti was the women’s silver medallist and in the men’s division Barrhead beat Peace Wapiti in two sets for gold and the Wolves won bronze.

Bellerose football

A preview of metro Edmonton football playoff between the Bellerose Bulldogs and Spruce Grove Panthers kicks off Friday at Fuhr Sports Park.

Game time is 6 p.m. between the 3-3 fourth-place teams in the division one Carr conference.

The opening playoff round between the teams finishing fourth and fifth is Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Foote Field.

Bellerose, listed 10th in week seven of the Football Alberta Tier I (1,250-plus students) rankings, ended a two-game winless stretch in Friday’s 41-6 victory against the Jasper Place Rebels (0-6) in St. Albert.

Mohammad Zeidan booted field goals of 31 and 35 yards.

Gage Froese rushed for 145 yards on 18 carries and quarterback Tristan Olenick completed eight of 16 passes for three touchdowns and one interception and ran two yards for another TD.

On the receiving end of TD passes from Olenick in the second quarter were Caleb Akerley with a pair and Jordan Howe as Bellerose ended the first half ahead 31-6.

Jakob Kikkert and Owen Fradette led the defence with five tackles apiece.

Jayden Randall picked off two passes and Evan Kumka had one interception.

Randall also tossed a 28-yard TD pass to Adam Rafat.
