Sabres at home

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors host the Maple Leafs tonight in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Faceoff is 7:45 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.

In the nitro north division, the Sabres (6-3) are first and the Maple Leafs (17-1) are last in the six-team standings.

Last weekend in Calgary, the Sabres beat the Bisons 6-4 and lost 5-1 to the Flames.

The Flames (9-1) and Bisons (8-3-1) are ranked first and second, respectively, in the AMBHL.

Evan Sundar tallied twice and Adam Browton, Hayden Selin, Carmelo Crandell and Ashton Hutchinson notched singles against the Bisons.

Shots were 43 apiece as Adam Chin (3-1, 3.91 GAA) backstopped the Sabres to victory.

In the next game, the Flames struck four times on 13 shots in the first period while outshooting the Sabres 42-17.

Ben Constantio replied for the Sabres and Luke Roberts (3-2, 3.31 GAA) was in net.

SAPEC volleyball

The St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high volleyball playoffs are underway this week with the girls’ and boys’ quarter-finals.

Seeded first in the playoff brackets are the Sir George Simpson Voyageurs (8-0, 24 GW/4 GL) for the girls and Richard S. Fowler Falcons (8-0, 23 GW/2 GL) for the boys.

Next week the semifinals are Monday for the girls and Tuesday for the boys and Thursday’s Tier I city finals are 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:45 p.m. for the boys at Bellerose Composite High School.

Last year Simpson three-peated in four sets against the undefeated Falcons in the girls’ final and Lorne Akins defeated Fowler in five sets for the boys' banner.

Slash games

The St. Albert Slash skate on home ice this weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

Game times are 8 p.m. Friday against the Lloydminster Steelers (3-4) and 8:15 p.m. Sunday against the Edmonton Pandas (4-1) at Go Auto Arena.

The winners of three consecutive Esso Cup midget AAA national championships are 7-0 in league play after weekend results of 2-0 against the Red Deer Chiefs (1-5) in St. Albert and 3-1 against the Rocky Mountain Raiders (2-3-3) in Dewinton.

Jenna Goodwin and Allison Reich (power play) scored against the Chiefs and Holly Borrett stopped 20 shots for her second shutout and the team's third this season.

Borrett (5-0, 1.00 GAA) also faced 20 shots against the Raiders as Faith Greenough, Kali MacDonald and Kelsey Hall (power play) scored and Reich added two assists.
