Sports Day

Today marks Sports Day in St. Albert.

The celebration of sports in the community goes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Servus Credit Union Place.

Try it activities involve testing your skills in baseball, BMX, bowling, curling, fastball, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, ringette, rugby, soccer and rowing.

Meet and greet opportunities, as well as coaching and volunteer information, is available through the following participating organizations:

Opportunities to win draw prizes are available at the St. Albert Dodge booth.

A Sports Central donation drop-off box will also be on-site for new or gently used sports equipment items. Sports Central will gather, recycle and redistribute the equipment to those in need in northern Alberta, including St. Albert.

Junior B hockey

The next game for the St. Albert Merchants is Sunday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Puck drop is 3:30 p.m. against the Strathcona Bruins (5-8-1) in Fultonvale.

The Merchants (7-5) were winners of five of the last six games before hosting the Edmonton Mustangs (1-10) Friday at Jarome Iginla Arena and the score was unavailable at press time.

The team’s home record prior to the game was 3-2.

Entering the weekend, Ryan Cooper was tied for second in CJHL scoring with 25 points in 10 games and Bryce Sturm shared fifth spot with 22 in 12 games.

Stuart Dovey’s 10 goals in 12 games also ranked among the top league scorers.

Upcoming for the Merchants are the first-place Beverly Warriors (11-2) and Friday’s faceoff against the defending Founders Cup champions is 8 p.m. in St. Albert.
