Skyhawks volleyball

The metro Edmonton zone 3A provincial qualifier tournaments start Thursday for the St. Albert Skyhawks in men’s and women’s volleyball.

The Skyhawks are ranked second in their respective six-team draws.

The Skyhawks are hosting pool B action for the men and the lady Skyhawks are competing at Louis St. Laurent.

Fridays’ crossover playoffs start at 2 p.m. for the men at Strathcona Christian Academy in Sherwood Park and the women at Edmonton Christian.

The finals are 7:30 p.m. to determine the zone reps for provincials next weekend. Two men’s teams advance to Magrath and the top women’s team heads to St. Paul.

Thursday’s match times in pool play for the Skyhawks are 5 p.m. against the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans of Spruce Grove for the men and Ardrossan Bisons for the women and 7 p.m. against Ardrossan for the men and Louis St. Laurent Barons for the women.

Ranked first in the tournament draws are the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles (14-0) as the men’s division two champions and Edmonton Christian Lions (8-5) as the women’s division one semifinalists.

In league play, the Skyhawks finished 6-6 as quarter-finalists in the men’s division two and 3-8 in the women’s division one.

Sharks at home

Friday the midget elite St. Albert Sharks host the Edmonton Pandas in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

Game time is 8 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

In the north standings, the Sharks (4-1) and Lloydminster Steelers (4-2) share first place ahead of the Pandas (3-2-2).

Sunday the Sharks faceoff against the provincial champion Calgary Fire Red (5-1) at 3:30 p.m. at Kinex Arena.

The 5-1 loss to Calgary in the 2019 final marked the second provincial silver medal in as many years for the Sharks.

The winners of four straight are led offensively by Sierra Whillans’ five goals in two games and Mikayla Sarapuk’s three goals and six points.

Sabres game

The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres skate Friday in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8:15 p.m. against the KC Squires (6-6-1) at Callingwood Twin Arenas.

The Sabres (9-3) are first in the Nitro north division and third overall in the 20-team AMBHL.

Carmelo Crandall is tied for fourth in league scoring with 20 points and his 11 goals are tops on the Sabres.
