Basketball at PK

Today at 5:30 p.m. the Paul Kane Blues host the Spruce Grove Panthers in metro Edmonton division one women’s basketball.

Paul Kane is 5-3 and the Panthers are 2-6 in league play.

Paul Kane was 13-7 overall before last weekend’s Magrath tournament and scores were unavailable at press time.

In the second Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association’s 4A rankings, Paul Kane is one of five honourable mentions after listed ninth previously.

Division one teams ranked ahead of Paul Kane in 4A are the No. 1 St. Albert Skyhawks (9-0), No. 3 Jasper Place Rebels (8-0) and No. 8 Salisbury Sabres (6-3) while the Strathcona Lords (6-3) and St. Francis Xavier Rams (4-5) are honourable mentions.

Flyers hockey

The St. Albert Flyers start a four-game homestand tonight to wrap up the regular season in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 7:45 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Squires (20-10-4) at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The next home contest is 10:45 a.m. Sunday against the Grande Peace Storm (4-24-7).

The Flyers (9-15-9) are 0-5-3 since the 3-2 win Jan. 9 against the KC Centennials (13-15-4) in St. Albert and the last two games were ties of 3-3 against the PAC Saints (7-21-6) and 1-1 against the Leduc Oil Kings (11-14-8).

The Flyers are led by Liam Fitzgerald’s 37 points and Liam Cochrane’s 18 goals.

Soccer festival

The season windup for the U4 to U11 indoor players registered in the St. Albert Soccer Association kicks off Saturday at Servus Credit Union Place.

The 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. session includes 25-minute matches and fun activities for the U4, U5, U6 and U7 division players.

The U9 and U11 players have similar events scheduled Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Organizers are expecting more than 2,000 SASA members will participate in the Canada Soccer Active Start Soccer Festival weekend.

Sharks hockey

The midget elite St. Albert Sharks skate into the weekend as the top north division team in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

The Sharks (15-5-1) are also ranked third overall in the AFHL behind Calgary Fire Red (20-3) and Calgary Fire White (17-4-3) with five games left before the playoffs.

Saturday at 1:15 p.m. the Sharks play the Lloydminster Steelers (12-8-2) in Bonnyville and Sunday’s game against the North Central Impact (8-11-3) starts at 8 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.

Sierra Whillans leads the Sharks with 12 goals and 19 points.
