Merch Madness

Round two in the Capital Junior B Hockey League playoffs continue Sunday for the St. Albert Merchants.

Game two in the best-of-five quarter-final series against the Founders Cup champion Beverly Warriors goes 8 p.m. at Clareview Arena.

Beverly also hosts game three Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Clareview.

If needed, game four is Feb. 28 at Jarome Iginla Arena and game five is March 1 at Clareview and the start times are 8 p.m.

The score from Friday's series opener in St. Albert was unavailable at press time.

In the west division, Beverly (29-7-2, 229 GF/103 GA) and the Merchants (23-14-1, 181 GF/159 GA) placed second and third, respectively.

Beverly had a first-round bye and the Merchants swept the Spruce Grove Regals (5-30-3, 109 GF/259 GA) in the best-of-three west division qualifier 3-2 in overtime and 6-2.

In league play against Beverly, the Merchants lost twice by identical 8-3 scores and were winners 8-6 and 3-2 in OT.

Sabres at home

Tonight marks the last game for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres before the playoffs.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (9-19-4) at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The Sabres (22-6-3) are expected to faceoff against the KC Squires (10-16-5) in the nitro north division's best-of-three opening round in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

The teams played Friday at Callingwood Twin Arenas and the score was unavailable at press time.

The Sabres were coming off Monday’s 3-2 decision against the SSAC Lions (13-12-6) in St. Albert.

The second goal for Carmelo Crandell in the third period was the winner with 6:17 remaining.

The 29th goal and 44th point in 31 games for Crandell was also the team captain's 10th power-play tally.

Jacob Goudreau also scored as the Sabres outshot SSAC 33-28 with Adam Chin (11-3-1, 2.73 GAA) in net.

Free throw event

Sunday’s qualifier for the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Championships is free to enter for males and females nine to 14 years old.

A proof of age and indoor shoes is all you need to the shoot for the hoop.

The action starts at 2 p.m. at Ecole Secondaire Sainte Marguerite d’Youville.

Divisions are in single year increments and the winners advance to the March 15 regional championships at St. Joseph High School.

The Brother Anthony Council of St. Albert is sponsoring Sunday’s competition.
