The men’s and women’s rugby teams at Sturgeon Composite High School are competing for premier playoff titles today at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

The men’s final at 4:45 p.m. between the Spirits (4-0-1) and Leduc Tigers (4-0) is a rematch of last year’s championship tilt as Leduc handed Sturgeon its first loss after five straight wins by a score of 29-10.

In the metro Edmonton league, the Spirits and Tigers finished first in their respective pools. Sturgeon’s four wins, including the 41-0 semifinal rout of the ABJ Scots (3-2), were shutouts. A 19-all draw with the SFX Rams in the last game before the playoffs was the team’s only downfall.

Going into the final, the Spirits are averaging a hefty 45 points per game.

Both teams advance to provincials next weekend at Ellerslie. Leduc is in the tier II (3A schools) bracket. Last year in tier I (4A schools) Sturgeon lost three games at provincials.

The premier women’s final at 5 p.m. between the Spirits (6-0) and Bev Facey Falcons (5-1) features the top two metro teams. In league play the Spirits downed Facey 27-0. The Big Red Machine averaged 48 points per game this season.

The Spirits are gunning for their third premier title in four years. In last year’s final they lost a dramatic 10-5 decision to the Paul Kane Blues.

The premier winner will represent the league at tier I provincials. In previous trips to provincials the Spirits finished sixth in 2006 and fourth in 2007.

Meanwhile, the Blues (1-4) play the O’Leary Spartans (1-3) for the men’s city conference crown at 6:15 p.m. In pool B the Blues were outscored 193-12 in four losses. In the city semifinals they pulled off a 31-15 triumph over the winless Salisbury Sabres. O’Leary’s only win was the 70-7 blowout of Paul Kane in the last game before the playoffs. O’Leary is back on the pitch after several years without fielding a rugby team.

Two home games are scheduled for 8:15 p.m. tonight at Riel Park for St. Albert’s men’s teams in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

In division 1A the Impact Rangers (three wins, one loss) host the winless Serbian White Eagles on field two. The Rangers trail first-place Roma (three wins, one tie) by one point. Emmett Keenan and Irish import Mark Ervine lead the division scoring race with four goals apiece.

The division 1B Impact squad battles SG Eclipse FC (1-1-1) on field one. The Impact (two wins, one loss) is led offensively by Moritz Schmidt and Daniel Pilon with three goals apiece.

Tonight at 7 p.m., the St. Albert Reds battle the Druids in the women’s second division fixtures at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

In the Edmonton Rugby Union standings both teams sport 1-2 records.

In the St. Albert women’s program the Reds are the second 15 developmental squad. Last week they got hammered 65-10 by the Rockers (1-2).

The Druids are coming off a 67-24 throttling by the Blues (3-0), the first 15 women’s side in St. Albert.
