The midget AAA Cardinals take to the diamonds at Legion Memorial Park today for a pair of games against the Okotoks Black. First pitch for game one of the double-header is scheduled for noon, with the second game beginning at 3 p.m.

The Cardinals are coming off a successful weekend out in Moose Jaw, Sask. at a wood-bat tournament that saw the midgets bring home their first tournament trophy of the season. The Redbirds ran the table in Moose Jaw, going 6-0, smashing home 53 runs while allowing only five against. The Cardinals’ pitching rotation proved strong, combining to throw five complete games during the May long weekend tournament. The bats came alive as well as St. Albert posted wins of 11-2 over Unity, 7-0 over the Moose Jaw Canucks, 12-2 over the Regina Wolfpack and 18-0 over the Carrot River Imperials.

Today’s double-header is the first series between the Black and the Cardinals.

Once the midget Cardinals leave the field, the St. Albert Tabbies (formerly the junior Tigers) will take their place for a double-header against the Calgary Redbirds tonight. Game one starts at 6:30 p.m., with the second game scheduled for 8:30 p.m. at Legion.

The Tabbies were scheduled to play host to the Edmonton Angels on Monday night in Sunburst league action, but the game was postponed due to poor weather. The Tabbies have yet to play a regular season game as their only other start, May 12, was also postponed.

The St. Albert Blues second-division women’s rugby team is hoping to build on its performance in its season-opener when the Knights come to town at 2 p.m. today at Leading Edge Physiotherapy Field at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League will field 20 teams this year with the addition of five new entries. The season kicks off in both divisions on Sunday.

The defending champions are the Pink Panthers in tier I and the Mavericks in tier II. In division one, the Panthers will be tested by Revolution FC (2007 tier I champions going for gold at the 2009 World Masters Games in Australia), Storm United (last year’s division one pennant winners) and the Morinville Ladies (second place in division one after four-straight pennant-winning seasons. In the tier I final, the fourth-place panthers edged Morinville 2-1 on a late goal by Leah Muntain. The loss was only Morinville’s second of the year.
