Junior B hockey

The St. Albert Merchants wrap up a four-game homestand Sunday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. against the Beverly Warriors (27-6), the west division leaders and last year’s Founders Cup playoff champions.

The Merchants (20-14) were 11-6 at Jarome Iginla Arena before hosting the Morinville Jets (13-2-1-1) Friday and the score was unavailable at press time.

The Merchants skated into the rivalry game as winners of two in a row and four of the last five games.

Ryan Cooper and Bryce Sturm ranked one-two in team scoring with 53 and 52 points, respectively, and Sturm’s 25 goals were two more than Cooper’s total.

The Merchants have two games remaining after this weekend before the playoffs and the opponent in the best-of-three qualifying round is expected to be the Spruce Grove Regals (4-27-3).

Sharks hockey

Sunday the midget elite St. Albert Sharks host the Edmonton Pandas in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

Faceoff is 8:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

The Sharks (12-4-1), Lloydminster Steelers (10-6-2) and Pandas (10-5-2) are the top three teams in the north division.

The Sharks and Steelers split two games last weekend and the results were 3-0 for the visitors in St. Albert and 4-2 for the Sharks in Bon Accord.

The Sharks were outshot 24-16 in the first game as the Steelers scored three times in the first period.

In the rematch, Natalie Balog (6-1-1, 1.64 GAA) stopped a game-high 28 shots in her third start in a row.

Sierra Whillans produced one goal and two assists and Raeanne Cyr, Kaitlyn Black (power play) and Sykora Thornton (empty netter) also scored as the Sharks finished with 20 shots.

Whillans leads the Sharks with nine goals and 14 points.

Midget 15 hockey

Tonight’s home game for the St. Albert Flyers starts at 8 p.m. against the SSAC Bulldogs at Jarome Iginla Arena

Eleven points separate the Flyers (9-14-7) and Bulldogs (16-7-4) in the middle of the north standings in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Sunday the Flyers play the PAC Saints (7-18-4) at 5:15 p.m. at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena.

The Flyers are winless in five games while going 1-4-1 in January.

The midget 15 team is led offensively by Liam Fitzgerald’s 35 points and Liam Cochrane’s 18 goals.
