HURLER – Everet Stewart fires a pitch for the U18 AA St. Albert Cardinals Red, one of nine St. Albert Minor Baseball Association teams competing in four AA divisions at the Larry Rindero Memorial Tournament this weekend at Legion Memorial Park and Meadows Diamonds in Morinville. In pool B at Legion park, the Cardinals played the Edmonton Padres and Friday's score was unavailable at press time. The Cardinals are up to bat tonight against the EABA Angels at 8 p.m. and Sunday against the South Jasper Place Jays at 7 p.m. The St. Albert Cardinals Blue are also competing in pool B of the U18 division. Criterium racing

The Perron District Criterium wheels into action Sunday morning.

Six races of various time lengths are scheduled for the city’s downtown core and the start/finish area for the 1.1-kilometre circuit is in front of St. Albert Place.

The counter-clockwise race loop runs through St. Anne Street, Sir Winston Churchill Ave., Perron Street and back to St. Anne Street.

Race times are as follows:

  8:30 a.m. category men five.

  9:25 a.m. category women four/five.

10:20 a.m. category men four.

11:20 a.m. category men three.

12:25 p.m. category women one/two/three.

1:30 p.m. category men one/two.

Cyclists must have an Alberta Bicycle Association racing license in order to compete in the criterium.

The road cycling event is co-hosted by Cranky’s Bike Shop Cycling Club of St. Albert and Velocity Cycling Club of Edmonton.

A number of cyclists at the criterium are also expected to race in the Sunnyside ITT on Monday in Bon Accord.

The individual time trial event begins at 10 a.m. There is no mass start as the cyclists go in one-minute intervals for 25 km.

Judo nationals

Ten members of the St. Albert Judo Club are fighting for medals at the Canadian Open Judo Championships this weekend at the Butterdome.

Kyle Crowell, an instructor and judoka at the Riel Park-based club, fights in the veteran category and is the reigning 81-kilogram national champion.

Baseball tourney

Today’s opening ceremony for the Larry Rindero Memorial Tournament starts at 1 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The tournament features 36 AA teams in the U18, U15, U13 and U11 divisions and nine teams are representing the St. Albert Minor Baseball Association.

The Baseball Alberta Girls are also competing in the U13 and U15 divisions.

The tournament schedule of 57 games includes 12 in Morinville.

The first-place teams in pools A and B in the four divisions qualify for Monday’s finals at 3 p.m. for U18, 3:30 p.m. for U11 and 4:15 p.m. for U15 and U13 at the Legion diamonds.
