SAWSL final

The Playoff Cup final Sunday between Mavericks 09 and Kickers in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League starts at 5 p.m. at Forest Park field.

Mavericks 09 (11-1, 103 GF/7 GA) and Kickers (8-3, 65 GF/19 GA) finished first and second, respectively, in the seven-team SAWSL table.

Last weekend’s semifinal scores were 6-0 Mavericks 09 against Gini’s and 2-1 Kickers against Mavericks 95.

Mavericks 09 recently finished fourth in the Alberta Soccer Association Tier III tournament in Calgary after winning the provincial championship last year in Edmonton.

Merchants hockey

The last exhibition for the St. Albert Merchants before the Capital Junior B Hockey League regular season is Sunday’s home game against the Sherwood Park Knights.

Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.

Last weekend’s results were 4-2 against the Stony Plain Flyers in St. Albert and an 8-2 loss to the Edmonton Royals at Coronation Arena.

Friday’s score against the Flyers in Stony Plain was unavailable at press time.

League play starts with Friday’s home opener against the Edmonton Mustangs at 8 p.m.

The pre-game tailgate party begins at 6:30 p.m. and proceeds from the barbecue and admission sales will assist Aven, a seven-year-old from Onoway who is receiving treatments for Medulloblastoma, an aggressive and malignant form of brain cancer.

Aven and her family, including twin sister Lily and three other siblings, will perform the ceremonial puck drop.

The Merchants are also assisting the 102.3 Now! Radio’s Empties for Angels campaign in support of Aven by teaming up with Original Joe’s St. Albert with today’s Mexican Fiesta fundraiser.

Bottles can be dropped off and cash donations will be accepted from 2 to 8 p.m. at Original Joes.

The Merchants are also raffling off a hot tub at the event and tickets are $20 or three for $50. A portion of the sales will go toward the cause.

The winning ticket will be drawn at Friday’s game.

Raiders hockey

The St. Albert Nektar Raiders continue exhibition action in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League this weekend with two games at Bill Hunter Arena.

Faceoff times are 7:30 p.m. tonight against the Grande Peace Storm and 4:45 p.m. Sunday against the Southside Athletic Club.

The Raiders are 1-1 in the preseason after beating the KC Pats 2-1 and the 4-1 loss to the Sherwood Park Kings.

Cuts to the training camp roster of five netminders, 10 defencemen and 22 forwards were expected after Thursday’s intersquad game.
