Stick provincials

The provincial stick open championships are rocking the St. Albert Curling Club this weekend.

The competition features 24 two-person teams slotted into four pools for qualification in the eight-team championship and 16-team consolation brackets.

The last draw in pool play is 1 p.m. before the consolation playoffs start at 2:30 p.m.

Sunday’s playoffs are the 10 a.m. consolation quarter-finals, 11 a.m. championship quarter-finals, 1 p.m. semifinals and 2:30 p.m. finals.

The winner of the Alberta Stick Curling Championship trophy, sponsored by Milt and June McDougall of St. Albert, advances to the 48-team nationals in April at Regina.

Atom AA action

Today’s skills competition at the Shootout in St. Albert atom AA hockey tournament at Jarome Iginla Arena starts at 5:30 p.m.

All eight teams will be represented, including the Crusaders and Barons of the St. Albert Minor Hockey Association.

Pool play in the 17-game tournament wraps up today and among Sunday’s playoff games are the 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. semifinals and 2:30 p.m. final.

Today the Crusaders play the Confederation Vipers at 8:45 a.m. and Trails West at 1:45 p.m. and the Barons faceoff against the Roughnecks at 10 a.m. and NE Crush at 3 p.m.

Friday’s scores between the Crusaders and KC Icemen and Barons versus the KC Cougars were unavailable at press time.

Junior B playoffs

The playoff series between the St. Albert Merchants and Spruce Grove Regals continues Sunday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.

Faceoff is 7:45 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena.

The opening game in the best-of-three west division qualifying round was played Friday in St. Albert and the score was unavailable at press time.

Game three, if needed, is 1 p.m. Monday at Jarome Iginla Arena.

A victory by the Merchants would set the stage for the best-of-five quarter-final against the Founders Cup champion Beverly Warriors and the series starts next weekend.

In the west division, the Merchants (23-14-1) finished third behind Beverly (29-7-2) and the North Edmonton Red Wings (30-7-1) while the Regals (5-30-3) placed sixth.

In league play, the Merchants beat the Regals 8-3, 9-6, 7-4 and 4-3 in overtime.
