ON TAP: St. Albert Valkyries huddle up in midget female football and more

The St. Albert Valkyries make their midget female debut Friday in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

Game time is 9:15 p.m. against the West Edmonton Raiders at Clarke Stadium.

The CDMFA’s inaugural midget female season features 14- to 17-year-olds playing full contact football in a six-on-six format.

The Wetaskiwin Warriors and Leduc Wildcats are also competing in the five-game schedule that ends May 11.

The Edmonton Storm, a women’s tackle team for ages 16 plus in the Western Women’s Canadian Football League, is assisting the CDMFA in promoting females playing football in a league that is their own.

All teams in the St. Albert Minor Football Association are co-ed for ages six to 15.

U18 nationals

The third annual Curling Canada Optimist U18 nationals is underway for St. Albert skips Nathan Molberg and Julia Bakos at the Glen Allan Recreation Complex in Sherwood Park.

The 14-team men’s and women’s draws are split into two pools and the top four in each pool will play in a double knockout for qualification in the medal round starting 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The men’s and women’s medal finals are 1 p.m. Sunday.

Molberg, third Ben Helston, second Nick Warkman, lead Morgan Bilassy and coach Nicole Bellamy are Team Alberta as the U18 provincial champions.

Bakos, third Quinn Prodaniuk, second Kim Bonneau, lead Julianna MacKenzie and coach Blair Lenton are the Alberta host team as the second-place finishers at U18 provincials.

Several men’s and women’s curlers at nationals competed at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, including the Molberg foursome of St. Albert and the Crestwood rink of Molberg, Prodaniuk, MacKenzie and Alyssa Nedohin.

Storm game

Saturday the St. Albert Storm tackles the Edmonton Seahawks in midget spring league football.

Kickoff is 12 noon at Clarke Stadium.

Both teams won their season openers last weekend in Lacombe by scores of 14-7 for the Storm over the Fort McMurray Ravens and 21-19 for the Seahawks against the Edmonton Mustangs.

The Storm roster of Grade 9, 10 and 11 student athletes includes representation from the Bellerose Bulldogs, Paul Kane Blues, St. Albert High Skyhawks and Sturgeon Spirits of the metro Edmonton high school league.

The Capital District Minor Football Association midget spring league consists of seven teams playing a six-game schedule that ends May 11.
