Slash homestand

The St. Albert Slash host the Calgary Fire this weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

Start times are 8 p.m. Friday and 7:45 p.m. Saturday at Go Auto Arena.

The last game for the Slash (19-2-1, 63 GF/22 GA) was the 2-1 loss to the Fire (12-9-1, 47 GF/47 GA) Jan. 26 in Calgary.

The Slash record is 16 wins, two losses, one overtime win, two shootout wins and one shootout loss.

Nine wins have been shutouts by Mabel Maltais (11-1, 0.99 GAA) with a league-high five and Holly Borrett (8-1-1, 0.99 GAA) with four.

Jenna Goodwin leads the AFHL in goals with 12 and is second in points with 18.

Jayde Cadieux is also second in assists with 10.

The three-time defending Esso Cup midget AAA national champions have eight games remaining before the Final Frozen Four provincials, March 20 to 22 in Calgary, and the winner represents Alberta in the Pacific Region national qualifier against the B.C. champion.

The 12th annual Esso Cup is April 19 to 25 in Prince Albert, Sask.

Midget AA games

Friday the St. Albert Steel faceoff against the Canadian Athletic Club in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8:45 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.

The Steel (20-5-1) are ranked second in the Besa division behind the league-leading St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders (21-2-1) and the Canadians (19-6-2) are tied for first in the Anderson division.

The Steel are also the only team to beat the Crusaders and the scores were 6-4 Dec. 14 and 8-6 Jan. 24.

The Steel’s third consecutive victory was 5-2 against the Strathcona Warriors (6-17-4) last week in St. Albert.

Brett Reiter’s four-point night included three assists and Joshua Cyr struck twice on the power play.

Sean Mitchell and Aidyn Hutchinson also scored as the Steel outshot the visitors 51-19. Liam Bell (10-1, 3.14 GAA) was in net.

The last win for the Crusaders was 6-3 against SSAC Don Wheaton (9-17-3) Sunday in St. Albert.

Shea Spofford potted a pair and Brady Harroun, Hayden Carlson, Brandon Gallo and Anwar Moukhaiber notched singles as the Crusaders registered 51 shots.

Ethan Pool and Kaleb West chipped in with two assists apiece.

Cole Crozier (10-1, 3.16 GAA) faced 25 shots for the defending Playoff Cup champions.

The Crusaders travel this weekend to play the GPAC Storm (13-12-2) once and Peace River Royals (14-8-4) twice.
