Big win for Devils

The Devils pulled off a major upset against the perennial provincial championship contenders from the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League.

Tuesday’s 3-2 triumph against Mavericks 09 marked the first loss in the SAWSL regular season and playoffs since 2013 for the winners of five provincial medals in seven years.

The last time the Mavericks went down to defeat was the 2013 SAWSL division one final by a score of 3-2 to SA Force.

Prior to that loss, the Mavericks suffered a 5-2 setback to the Morinville Ladies in 2011 for the division one pennant and Tier 4 provincial berth.

The Devils (2-1, 13 GF/9 GA) opened the scoring against the Mavericks and never looked back as Kristen Kalynchuk finished with a pair and Nancy Coyne also found the back of the net at Forest Park field.

Lindsey Hornung and Natalie Miller replied for the Mavericks, (4-1, 36 GF/6 GA), the 2018 Tier 3 provincial champions.

At previous provincials in Tier 3, the Mavericks were awarded bronze in 2017, silver in 2016 and gold in 2014, and in 2012 were the Tier 4 bronze medallists.

The Mavericks also placed fourth in Tier 3 in 2013 and 2015.

Division 1A Impact

The St. Albert Impact 4 women’s team handed the Wind its first loss of the season in the division 1A fixtures in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

The defending Tier 1 provincial champions doubled the first-place team 4-2 Monday at Goldstick Park as Kelsey Carter tallied twice and Brittany Kindzierski and Shyanne Walton also scored in the Impact’s fifth win in a row.

Chloe Eaton of the U17 Impact Odinga team was in net.

Last month, the Impact (7-2) lost 4-3 to the Wind (8-1).

Kindzierski’s 10 goals and Walton’s nine lead all division scorers.

Sunday the Impact face ASC Fury/KC Trojans 2 (3-2-2) at 2 p.m. at ESA Complex and Monday’s match against the Edmonton Warriors 2 (0-8) starts at 7 p.m. at Riel Park.

Division 2A Impact

The St. Albert Impact 5 women’s team is leading the way in the division 2A table in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

The Impact (5-0-2) moved past Sherwood Park Phoenix 3 (5-1-1) for top spot in last week’s 8-1 drubbing of the Riverbend Ruckus (1-6-1) at Queen Elizabeth High School.

Goal scorers were Jissell Lafoy with three, Julia McDougall with two and singles from Micheline Nault, Heather Gerow and Kristen Patrick.

Mel Seidel was a last-minute replacement in net.

McDougall leads the team in goals with seven and Lafoy has five.

Sunday the Impact, unbeaten as a first-year division 2A team, and Selects FC (0-5-2) meet at 2 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Impact 1 premier

The St. Albert Impact 1 premier women suffered a stinging loss against a team below them in the Edmonton District Soccer Association table.

The Impact (5-5) fell 3-1 to Victoria 2 (3-6-3) Tuesday at Riel Park despite Brittany Kindzierski’s division-leading ninth goal of the season for last year’s second-place premier team and provincial silver medallists.

Tuesday’s match against Northwest United 2 (10-0-1) kicks off at 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex. The 2018 premier and provincial champions have scored 41 goals and allowed only one against this season.

Impact 2 premier

Two wins in three days against FC Excelsior 1 left the St. Albert Impact 2 premier women’s team unbeaten in four matches in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Scores were 3-1 at Coronation Park and 1-0 at Riel Park.

Nikki Panas, Abbey Pagee and Emily Cruz scored in the first game and Pagee did the damage in the rematch against Excelsior (0-11).

On tap for the Impact (4-3-2) is Xavier Academy (3-7) at 11 a.m. Sunday at Foote Field and Angels Scottish SC 2 (5-4-1) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Riel Park.

Impact 3 premier

Tuesday’s result in Sherwood Park marked the fifth match of the season without a goal for the St. Albert Impact 3 premier women’s team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association

The 4-0 setback to Phoenix 1 (7-2-2) was also the fourth shutout loss for the Impact (3-6-1). The team’s record includes a scoreless draw with Angels Scottish SC 2 (5-4-1) June 11.

The Impact enters Tuesday's match against FC Excelsior 1 (0-11) with nine goals. Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. at Riel Park.

Impact 2 men

Four losses in a row for the St. Albert Impact 2 men’s team ended with Monday’s draw against Santos FC in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Santos scored in the 50th minute and Sam Smith-Ackerl replied with his fifth goal and the team’s seventh of the season on a through ball in the 65th minute at Riel Park.

The Impact (1-5-2) dominated possession with a ton of chances, but lacked finish in front of the net to settle for the 1-1 tie against Santos (1-4-3), the second-last place team in the division 1A table.

Monday the Impact plays the Spruce Grove Saints (3-5) at 7 p.m. at Fuhr Sports Park.

Rangers on top

The next match for the first-place St. Albert Rangers is Sunday in the masters 35-plus men’s division 1B fixtures in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Kickoff is 6 p.m. against Palermo Masters FC (2-0-1) at ESA Complex.

The Rangers (3-0-2) were winners of three in a row before Friday’s contest against the Taps Thunderheads (0-3-1). The score was unavailable at press time.

The latest result was 5-2 against Barrabases FC (2-2-2) Sunday at Overlander field. Kevin O'Kell scored two and Alan Smith, Mark Steinke and Mike Thompson also connected in support of goalkeeper Jimmy Casper, who filled in for the regular ball stopper.

O’Kell and Alan Smith led the division in scoring with eight and six goals, respectively, before Friday's match
