Fastball St. Albert Invitational Tournament is up to bat this weekend

The 22nd annual Fastball St. Albert Invitational Tournament starts 4 p.m. Friday at the Meadowview, Henry Singer and Lorne Akins diamonds.

The tournament consists of 65 teams playing 142 games in the U10, U12, U14, U16 and U19 age groups in the A, B and C divisions.

The host St. Albert Angels are represented by 15 teams.

The finals are Sunday afternoon.

Soccer final

The Paul Kane Blues played kick to win against the St. Francis Xavier Rams in Tuesday’s metro Edmonton division two women’s soccer final.

The score from Foote Field was unavailable at press time.

Both teams competed in pool A and in league play the Rams doubled Paul Kane 4-2 in the May 7 season opener.

The semifinal scores were 4-0 for Paul Kane (6-1) against the pool A Bellerose Bulldogs (4-1-2) and 3-0 for the Rams (7-0) against the pool B St. Albert Skyhawks (3-3-1).

Oriah Martin-Coates struck twice and Alyson Katerenchuk and Sarah Hay notched singles for Paul Kane as Jayleen Hills posted the shutout.

Premier soccer

The St. Albert Impact 2 premier women’s soccer team ended a three-game winless stretch in the Edmonton District Soccer Association with its second victory of the season.

Shawna Sayaphet, Kiera Brown and Alana Mawhinney found the back of the net in the 3-2 outcome against Victoria 2 (0-6-1) Sunday at Goldstick Park.

Tuesday’s score between Impact 2 (2-3) and St. Albert Impact 3 (3-4) was unavailable at press time.

Impact 3 was coming off Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Sherwood Park Phoenix 1 (5-1) in Sherwood Park.

Down 2-0 at halftime, the Impact played Phoenix even with the lone goal coming from Madison Gamache.

The next premier matches are Sunday at ESA Complex as Impact 2 lines up against Phoenix at 4 p.m. and St. Albert Impact 1 (3-3) plays Impact 3 at 6 p.m.

Impact men

The St. Albert Impact men’s soccer teams are looking for bounce-back efforts after their latest losses.

In the Alberta Major Soccer League, Impact 1 (0-6-1) is in action Sunday against Lethbridge FC (2-3-2) at 2 p.m. at Bill Gilhespy Soccer Complex.

The Impact are winless in five matches after going down to defeat 4-0 to Edmonton Scottish (2-1-3) Sunday at Hamish Black Field.

The Impact have scored only one goal and it was by Masiah Hassan in the 4-1 loss to the Edmonton Drillers (1-1-4) May 29.

The Impact 2 division 1A team in the Edmonton District Soccer Association played the Edmonton Warriors (3-1) Monday, but the score was unavailable at press time.

The latest result for the Impact (1-3-1) was the 2-1 loss to Punjab Warriors/FC Al-Ikhwan (4-1) Sunday at Foote Field.

Punjab generated goals on a corner kick in the 35th minute and another in the 70th minute.

Sam Smith-Ackerl posted his team-leading third goal of the season in the 75th minute and Scott Robson rattled a shot off the crossbar in the 80th minute.

The next match is 7 p.m. Monday against Croatia Hajduk (1-2) at Croatia Soccer Club.

Kids of Steel

As of Monday morning, 225 individuals and three teams were registered for the 28th annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon on Sunday at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.

Online registrations end tonight at midnight through www.zone4.ca.

The Kids of Steel is hosted by the St. Albert Triathlon Association.

Athletes between four and 19 years old can participate as an individual or as a team on a swim-bike-run course varying in distance according to age group.

The youth/junior/U21 triathlon is also a draft legal race for athletes 14-24 years old.

The Kids of Steel starts at 8 a.m. with the U7 age division.

U15 AA baseball

The St. Albert Cardinals Red continued their winning ways at the Darin McDonald U15 AA Tournament last weekend in Spruce Grove.

The Cardinals defeated the Team Alberta U16 girls 13-0 in the final.

Brennen Stewart led the team in hitting at the tournament by going 6-for-10 at the plate, while Reid Bokenfohr and Sam MacKenzie drove in six runs apiece.

The only loss in the Baseball Alberta U15 AA League for the Cardinals (5-1) was 3-2 to the Grande Prairie Reds on May 29 at Callingwood Park.

The Cardinals and Grande Prairie (3-1) are slotted in the North 1 division.
