Rugby twin bill

Friday’s doubleheader at St. Albert Rugby Football Club features the host division two and three men’s teams in the Edmonton Rugby Union.

Kickoff times are 6:30 p.m. against the Pirates (1-1) in division three and 8 p.m. against the Nor’Westers (0-2) in division two.

In division three, SARFC (1-2, 114 PF/125PA) gave the Edson Axmen (1-1) all they could handle with a short-staffed lineup in Saturday’s 55-53 loss.

SARFC travelled to Edson with 13 players, two short of the starting 15, and finished with 11. Darby Hood, who was already banged up, and Diego Guzman required treatments after the match.

Matt Herod, Mark Button and Andrew (Kiwi) Marsden provided veteran support as SARFC picked up two big bonus points in the loss to stay in the playoff chase.

The last division three match for SARFC (1-2, 63 PF/112 PA) was the 55-20 loss to the Parkland Sharks (2-1) June 7 at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

Junior golf results

Ethan Wilson of St. Albert carded five birdies while winning his second Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour event.

Wilson, 14, of the Glendale posted scores of 73 and 77 for a two-day total of 150 in the bantam boys’ division at River Bend Golf Club in Red Deer.

Zachary Haydamack, 14, of Rocky View County was the runner-up at 154 (74-80).

The recent tour stop in Red Deer also featured the second-place finish by Connor Ackroyd of St. Albert in the collegiate division.

Ackroyd, 19, fired rounds of 76 and 77 (153) to finish two shots back of Jarrett Brossert, 19, of Fort Saskatchewan. Brossert (77-74) made four of his seven birdies on day two of the competition.

Last year Ackroyd, a golf team member of the MacEwan University Griffins, was the Windermere junior club champion and represented Canada at the Nordic Junior Team matches in Estonia.

Junior high rugby

The tradition of excellence continues for the Lorne Akins Gators in the Greater Edmonton Junior High Flag Rugby League.

The Gators swept the division one seven-a-side finals recently at Ellerslie Rugby Park for the umpteenth time for 11 championship cups in school history.

The girls defeated Londonderry for a hard-earned 15-5 decision and the boys used their superior speed and passing skills to beat Ottewell 20-5.

Fifty-two boys and girls suited up for the Orange and Blue Gators in the Tier I and II divisions under the direction of coach Shawn Anderson.
