Cross-country results

Last week’s metro Edmonton cross-country zone finals determined the qualifiers for today’s Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association championships at Dunmore.

The top 18 finishers in the male and female junior, intermediate and senior divisions at Gold Bar Park included the following St. Albert athletes:

Junior females, 4,000 metres

Sykora Thornton, Bellerose Bulldogs: 12th, 19 minutes and 42 seconds.

Charlotte Campbell, Bellerose: 18th, 20.12.

Intermediate males, 5,000 m

Alec Tinga, Paul Kane Blues: 15th, 21.12.

Senior females, 5,000 m

Amelie Sherwin, Paul Kane: sixth, 23.36.

Isabelle Poulin, Paul Kane: eighth, 24.39.

Mackenzie Jackshaw, Paul Kane: 16th, 26.02.

Senior males, 6,000 m

Ben Colliou, St. Albert Skyhawks: eighth, 24.47.

Midget AA hockey

The St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders skate into the weekend undefeated in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.

The back to back Playoff Cup winners host the SSAC Canadian Brewhouse (2-2-1)) tonight at 8:30 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena and Sunday’s game time is 4:45 p.m. against the Sturgeon Sting (2-2) at Landrex Arena in Morinville.

The Crusaders (4-0-1) are coming off Tuesday’s 5-2 decision against the KC Colts (1-4) at Castledowns Arena.

Carter Stock, Zachary Desranleau, Owen Bourque, Lucas Sadownyk and Hayden Carslon (power play) scored as the Crusaders outshot KC 54-31 with Jack Robinson (2-0-1, 2.00 GAA) between the pipes.

Brady Harroun leads the Crusaders in goals with six and is tied with Brydon Foster for the most points on the team with six.

The Crusaders and St. Albert Steel (3-0) are the top two teams in the Besa division of the metro conference.

The Steel have the weekend off and the next home game is Oct. 26 against the Wainwright Polar Kings (1-2-1) at 1:45 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The Steel are led offensively by Jayden Antunes' five goals and Brett Reiter’s five points.

Bellerose volleyball

The highly ranked division two Bellerose Bulldogs have two matches remaining before the playoffs swing into action in metro Edmonton senior men's volleyball.

Monday the Bulldogs (8-1, 24 GW/9 GL) travel to play the Ardrossan Bisons (3-6) and Tuesday’s home match is against the O’Leary Spartans (7-2). Start times are 6:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs were winners of seven in a row before the 19-25, 17-25, 16-25 loss to the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles (8-0, 34 GW/2 GL) Oct. 9 in Sherwood Park.

The playoff dates are Oct. 28 (quarter-finals), Oct. 30 (semifinals) and Nov. 6 (7 p.m. final at Harry Ainlay High School).

The last volleyball championship for the Bellerose men was in 2017 in division two.

Royals at home

The next home game for the St. Albert Royals is Tuesday in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8:30 p.m. against SSAC Cameron Homes at Go Auto Arena.

League play started with Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Hockey Central Panthers in St. Albert and tonight the Royals are in Red Deer to play the Chiefs at 7:30 p.m.

Reid Bokenfohr and Kaiden Jean at even strength and Andrew Despins and Tye Cameron on the power play scored against the Panthers as a late goal was the difference in the match.

Josh McCormack faced 50 shots while the Royals were credited with 17.

The Royals have lost the REM final the last two years to the Sylvan Lake-based Panthers.

Flyers fall

The St. Albert Flyers enter Tuesday’s home game after losing for the first time this season in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 8:15 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Squires (4-1-2) at Jarome Iginla Arena.

The midget 15 Flyers (3-1-3) had won three straight before Thursday’s 8-2 setback to the SSAC Bulldogs at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

Andon Coles and Liam Fitzgerald (shorthanded) scored in the opening 12 minutes before SSAC rallied with a pair to end the first period and made it 5-2 after 40 minutes.

Shots were 35-30 for SSAC and Damon Cunningham (1-1-1, 4.77 GAA) was in net.

Sevens Rugby

Forty-eight males on four teams pitched in to represent the St. Albert Rugby Football Club at the fourth annual Kamloops Sevens Tournament and the two-day event was hosted by BC Rugby last weekend.

In the six-team U15 division, SARFC lost the final 31-12 to James Bay AA to finish 4-2 as the silver medallist.

The top U15 SARFC scorer was Ryan Richer with 50 points.

The U17 playoff results were 7-5 for SARFC Red (4-1) against Langley for fifth place and 22-0 for SARFC Blue (2-3) against Williams Lake for ninth place.

SARFC Red, an older side than SARFC Blue, beat the Clan 31-5 on day two, but missed out on qualifying for the medal playoffs on points differential.

Josh Looker led SARFC Red in scoring with 50 points.

Bayside, 27-0 winner over SARFC Red on day one, was the gold medallist, Calgary Mavericks captured bronze and the Clan placed eighth in the 12-team division.

The U19 SARFC squad lost four in a row before beating the Kamloops Raiders 17-14 for fifth place out of seven teams and the Clan wound up as silver medallists.
