The Muriel Martin Dinos led the way to a one-two-three-four finish by St. Albert schools in the elementary girls’ 8x200 metre relay at the 32nd annual Edmonton Journal Indoor Games last Saturday at the Butterdome. The winning time was 4:19.

The winning time was 4:19.06 by the Dinos’ team of Katryne Pharis, Sydney De La Mare, Katherine Corrigan, Melanie LeBlanc, Mackenzie Sturdy, Emma Hunsche, Alexis Anderson, Stephanie Mar and Dana Hunt.

Finishing a close second at 4:20.10 was the Neil M. Ross team of Kailey Strymecki, Shaelyn Gupta, Shelby Samoil, Alex Whelan, Caitlyn Dosko, Paige Gratton, Sidney Wideman, Madelyn Curle and substitutes Loriana Caputo, Mackenzie Dennis and Taylor Mickanuik.

Keenooshayo placed third at 4:22.65 and Sir Alexander Mackenzie was fourth at 4:25.02.

The highest-placing elementary boys’ relay team from St. Albert in the 8x200m was the Dinos’ second-place showing in the consolation final, for seventh overall, at 4:23.63.

In the junior boys’ 8x200m, the first-place Vincent J. Maloney B team was clocked a 3:30.43 and the Lorne Akins A team was the runner-up at 3:35.20. Last year Maloney won the relay event in 3:32.18.

Meanwhile, individual medal winners from St. Albert included the following athletes:

Valerie Schlottke, Keenooshayo: first in elementary girls’ 200m (29.79).

Morgan Walker, Sir George Simpson: first in junior girls’ 200m (26.23).

Nikki Oudenaarden, Paul Kane: second in senior girls’ 200m (25.59).

Rachel Francois, Paul Kane: first in senior girls’ 800m (2:15.52).

Andre Francois, Edmonton Harriers: first in masters men’s 50m (6.30).

Garrett King, Paul Kane: second in senior boys’ 200m (23.12).

The St. Albert LunaChix skate into the Ringette Alberta petite B provincials as the zone 5 champions.

At the eight-team U11 provincials this weekend in Medicine Hat, the LunaChix are in the same pool as the Fort McMurray Ice Melters, Medicine Hat Fusion and Red Deer Bling.

The first game of the season for the LunaChix was a loss to Sherwood Park at the St. Albert Turkey Ring. They would go on to win four in a row for the tournament title.

The LunaChix were also victorious at tournaments in Beaumont (4-0), Red Deer (3-0-1) and Edmonton (5-0). In the final of the Sherwood Park tourney they lost 8-7 to the home team.

In the regular season the LunaChix won 15 and tied two against Lacombe and Leduc to finish first overall.

In the zone playdowns the LunaChix rattled off three straight wins, then lost 4-2 to Sherwood Park. In the rematch they beat the Park 5-2 for the provincial berth.

The LunaChix are Emma Lenuik, Quincy Begert, Jordyn Knoppers, Caity Palfy, Kristen Fedoriw, Taylor Ostafichuk, Jordie Hook, Erika Dubrule, Rhiannon Bassett, Abbey Shuttler, Darian Delhez and goalie Emma Mehok. Head coach is Lisa Fedoriw. Assistants are Dwayne Shuttler, Dave Hook, Dean Ostafichuk and Steve Knoppers. Manager is Leslie Begert.

The Paul Kane Soccer Academy is spending the spring break in England studying the sport of football.

The academy’s 30 students will train with several of the premier soccer club’s youth academies like Manchester United, Liverpool, Bolton and Charlton and will play a few exhibition matches with their students. They arrive home April 5.

The spring fling was organized through Challenger World Tours.

The Red Willow Badminton Club has a couple of major events lined up for players young and old.

Starting on Monday the club is holding a spring break camp for junior players regardless of ability, conducted by professional coach Scot Young.

The club’s next major tournament is April 16 to 17 for masters players born in 1980 or earlier, from novice to competitive level in age categories 30 to 70-plus.

With less than a month to go before the 25th annual St. Albert 10-Mile Road Race pounds the pavement, 334 runners had registered online or by mail for the April 18 event.

Entry fees are $45 online at www.eventsonline.ca, $55 mailed in or dropped off at Cranky’s Bike Shop or the Sturgeon Valley Athletic Club (SVAC) and $65 on race day at Grandin mall. Race time is 9:30 a.m.

Forms are available at the Tech Shop, Kinsmen Sports Centre, the Running Room, Cranky’s, SVAC and all race sponsors.

The course record for registrations is 976 in 1998.

The 10-miler, hosted by the St. Albert Roadrunners and Triathlon Club, is sanctioned by Athletics Alberta and is part of the TIMEX Canadian Road Race Series.
