As of Wednesday, 109 athletes had registered in 318 events for the Alberta Age Class Provincial Championships next weekend at Fowler Athletic Park.

The competition is also the selection meet for the Legion Canadian Youth Athletics Championships and the Midget Western Championships.

Forty track and field clubs from across Alberta are expected to participate. One of the larger clubs in Calgary is sending 70 athletes (18 peewees, 22 bantams, 12 midgets, 11 youths and seven open competitors). The host St. Albert Track and Field Club will be represented by 60 athletes.

There are 156 peewees, 144 bantams and 214 midgets in the province and 222 youth athletes registered this year with Athletics Alberta. Most of the midgets and youths will attend the meet.

A delegation of 80 athletes from Manitoba should also arrive by Friday to get a feel for the track.

The two-day meet will be run by 80 officials. The majority have experience working at worlds and the Olympic and Commonwealth games. In total, 1,800 hours of volunteer time is needed to make the meet a success, roughly 100 volunteers a day. They will be compiling results, helping officials run the events, manning the concession and giving out medals.

Planning for one of the biggest meets in St. Albert club history started in October 2009. The organizing committee is made up of parents and coaches from the club.

Admission to Fowler park is free. For more information, visit www.stalberttrackandfieldclub.com

Alex Jones of St. Albert has been selected to play for Team Holland at the World Lacrosse Championship.

The junior midfielder with the Dominican College Chargers is one of four players chosen from Canada and the United States to join the 22-man international Dutch roster as heritage players for the July 14 to 24 worlds in Manchester, England.

In their first trip to worlds in 2006 the Dutch finished 12th out of 21 teams with a 3-4 record. At the 2008 European championship they finished second overall.

In the East Coast Conference (ECC) with the NCAA division two Chargers, Jones received All-Conference honourable mention status after scoring a team-leading 39 goals and 47 points in 16 games. The Bellerose Composite High School graduate was second on the team with 56 ground balls. He also ranked sixth in the ECC in goals per game.

In conference play Jones recorded 23 goals and 28 points in 10 games.

The six-foot three and 215-pound scoring threat was the first Charger to be named All-Conference when he notched a team record 33 goals in conference action in 2007 as the team’s rookie of the year. He was also the offensive MVP in 2007 and 2008 for the Chargers, based in Orangeburg, N.Y.

Rick Stanley will run the show for the Paul Kane Blues next season in metro Edmonton high school basketball.

The former Alberta Golden Bears’ standout will coach the varsity men’s team after building a successful program at Jasper Place High School. The St. Albert resident will work in the Edmonton Public system as an assistant principal at Centre High away from the court.

Stanley takes over the bench duties from Cam Fischer, who is leaving Paul Kane to teach overseas for two years. Under his watch the last two seasons the Blues made it to the premier conference semifinals after going 8-4 in 2008/09 and 8-5 in 2009/10. Both years the Blues lost the playoff to determine the third metro team in the 4A Edmonton zone playdowns.

Fischer also coached the William D. Cuts Crusaders to the 2005 SAPEC city championship.
