The peewee AAA St. Albert Cardinals took it on the chin in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep by SEEBA.

The pair of defeats at Rundle Park doubled the team’s loss total after going 14-2 overall. In league play the Cardinals are 10-3.

Playing with a short bench minus three players, the Cardinals gave up five unearned runs in the 8-5 setback and in the rematch were overpowered by a strong pitching performance and lost 7-5.

In game one team defence spoiled a solid outing by starter Tanner McLean-Poll. He struck-out five over 4-1/3 innings and helped his own cause with two hits and two RBIs. Mason Libich chipped in with three hits.

In the second game the Cardinals struggled early against SEEBA’s six-foot-one right-hander and struck out 11 times over 5-1/3 innings. It was the first time this season the Cardinals had faced the hard thrower.

A well-balanced attack was led by Brendan Guy’s two hits.

The Cardinals are in tournament action in Kamloops this weekend.

League play continues July 11 with a doubleheader in Lloydminster.

The 46-man roster for the U17 Hockey Alberta provincial camp includes representation from the midget AAA St. Albert Raiders and Morinville.

Earning invites to the July 6 to 11 tryouts in Camrose from the Raiders were defencemen Matt Benning (7-14-21, 33 GP) and Nick Walters (5-13-18, 30 GP) and forwards Jayden Hart (6-15-21, 31 GP) and Troy Bourke (27-26-53, 34 GP), the recipient of the Trevor Linden Trophy as the league’s top forward. Jarid Hauptman (20-27-47, 28 GP), a Morinville forward who played midget 15 with Fort Saskatchewan, was also picked for the camp.

The players chosen were scouted throughout the season and evaluated through Team Alberta programs.

Eleven players will be selected to represent Alberta on Team Pacific at the U17 World Hockey Challenge, starting Dec. 28 in Winnipeg.
