Weekend action: indoor soccer festival, midget 15 Flyers and bantam AA hockey

Soccer festival

The indoor season windup for the U4 to U11 players in the St. Albert Soccer Association kicks off today at Servus Credit Union Place.

The Canada Soccer Active Start Soccer Festival consists of matches and activities for teams in six age divisions.

Today’s session consists of 25-minute fun games in the U4, U5, U6 and U7 divisions from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. the U9 teams participate in mini-games organized by staff coaches and the U11 teams are paired up for 40-minute games.

Midget 15 Flyers

Four games remain for the St. Albert Flyers before the north division provincial qualifier in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Tonight at 8 p.m. the Flyers play the Lloydminster Bobcats (18-10-3) at Akinsdale Arena and Sunday’s faceoff time is 1:30 p.m. against the host Leduc Oil Kings (19-9-3).

League play ends next weekend for the second-place Flyers (20-7-3) before competing in the divisional playoff tournament, March 7 to 10 at Lloydminster. The two finalists and the Edmonton host team advance to the six-team midget 15 provincials, March 20 to 24 at Meadows Community Recreation Centre.

The Flyers are 2-2 in February after going 3-2 last month.

The Flyers are coming off a tournament victory at the 18th annual Phoenix Presidents’ Day Invitational.

Scores in the U15AAA division were 6-0 against the Texas Tigers, 3-0 against the AZ Bobcats, 11-1 against the Empire Hockey Club, 4-0 against the Tigers and the final was 3-0 against Calgary Royals Gold (15-11-6) of the AMMHL’s south division.

Meanwhile, Ethan Sundar is the AMMHL’s top scorer with 60 points in 29 games and is tied for second in goals with 28. Sundar’s 10 power-play goals are also fourth best.

Bantam AA games

The final weekend of the regular season in the Edmonton Rural Bantam AA Hockey League is underway for the St. Albert teams in the blue division of the metro conference.

The Elite Pro Marketing Blues (17-10-3) are in Wainwright today to play the Polar Kings (16-12-3) at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday’s game against the PAC Timberwolves (8-15-7) is 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Today at 2:15 p.m. the Comets (7-16-8) host the Lloydminster Blazers (18-10-2) at Go Auto Arena.

Friday’s score between the Bears (16-11-4) and Sherwood Park Leafs (19-5-5) in St. Albert was unavailable at press time.
