AUGUST 1, 1943 – AUGUST 22, 2020

Robert George Brayman (Bob) was born in Toronto, raised in Oakville and moved west in 1971. He often remarked that he loved the big blue prairie sky too much to ever go back.  The son of William and Margaret, brother to Heather, Bob was a good student and a standout athlete and eventually found his calling as a teacher and a coach.

The promise of a new life with his wife Diane brought him to Alberta, first settling in Edmonton, then to Red Deer where he worked for the Department of Education and where his sons Christopher and Graham were born, and then on to St. Albert where the family put down roots. In addition to being a present and loving Dad to his sons, he was a devoted father-in-law to Beverly Milroy, an adoring Grandpa to Elijah, Joshua, Kate and Alec, and a well loved Uncle Bob to his nephews and niece.

Bob’s passions in life were his family and friends, his great love of music and literature and his athletic pursuits. He spent most of his professional career in St. Albert, teaching at all levels and working as a consultant and a school administrator.  He mentored other teachers, taught children with learning difficulties how to read, and made history and literature come alive in the classroom.  His dedication to teaching extended to the football field and the basketball court, where he not only amassed a string of victories and championships but also took the time to get to know his players, invested in their lives and sought to inspire them to a greater version of themselves.

Bob was a gentleman with an old world sensibility and ascribed to the qualities of decency, honesty and integrity above all else.   He was also humorous, quirky, and quick with the succinct and fitting comment; those who knew Bob knew he had a turn of phrase for every occasion.  He enjoyed the company of others, and especially loved “characters” who marched to the beat to their own drum.  A man of great empathy, his daughter-in-law recently told him, “you allow the light to shine on others”.

Robert George Brayman died peacefully under a blue sky in Kelowna BC, where he and Diane had happily retired to a comfortable home with a brilliant view. He had said to his eldest son a few days prior that he wanted only a little more time with his family and then just to “fade away”. Surrounded by loved ones, he did just that, with grace and dignity and the peace afforded to a man who had lived a good life.

(For a broader and more personal overview of Bob’s life, please refer to Everden Rust Funeral Services where you can read more about him and add your personal tributes.  When current restrictions cease, Bob’s family will plan a celebration of his life for all his friends and family.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to your local homeless shelter or women’s shelter in his memory, as he always looked out for people who needed a hand up.)
