Létourneau, Sister Marguerite

1929-2020

It is with great sadness that the Grey Nuns announce the passing of Sister Marguerite Letourneau on July 14, 2020 at Youville Home, at the age of 90 years.

Sister was born in St. Paul, AB. She entered the Grey Nuns of Montreal in St. Albert in 1949. Her first assignment was St. Paul Hospital, Saskatoon where she took her training in nursing. Among her duties, she worked for many years as Director of Nursing at the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary.

In 1959, she received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from l’Institut Marguerite d’Youville University in Montreal. Then she went to Rome to study Theology for one year and held the post of Youville Residence in Montreal as Director of Novices and temporary professed Sisters.

In 1976, Sr. Marguerite was elected Assistant General of the Grey Nuns. In 1981, she was elected Superior General for ten years. During her mandate, she was instrumental in promoting the canonization of Marguerite d’Youville, foundress of the Grey Nuns. She then organized a most stupendous celebration in Montreal so that more than 30,000 people could rejoice with all the Grey Nuns and the people who venerated St. Marguerite.

She leaves to mourn her sister, Eva Podlosky; brother, Bernard Letourneau;

 many nieces, nephews and many many friends.  The Grey Nuns also mourn

 her and will miss her joyful, witty character.

The Grey Nuns wish to thank the staff of Youville Home, Unit 2 who cared for

Sister Marguerite for four years.  Due to Covid – 19 restrictions, A Private Funeral Liturgy will be held.
