SÉVIGNY, Reverend Joseph Lucien “Raymond”

It is with much love that the family of Father Raymond Sévigny announce his sudden passing at the age of 85 years. He was embraced into the presence of Our Lord on Sunday, November 21, 2021, on the Feast of Christ the King.  He will be lovingly remembered by his sister, Jeannette (Dick) Ries; sisters-in-law, Gloria Sévigny and Colette Sévigny; many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Alvina; and siblings: Alphonse (Lena), Andy (Lee), Arthur (Alice), Lucille (Raymond), Evelyn (Dan), Robert and Roger.

Born and raised in St. Albert, Father Raymond came from a family of 9 and was one of the Sévigny Triplets. He was proud of his heritage, as his family was one of the first settlers in St. Albert.

Father Raymond was ordained on June 2, 1962 at St. Andrew’s Church in Edmonton. He served the majority of his ministry as pastor in Francophone parishes.  Father Raymond founded the Francophone Pastoral Association for the Edmonton Region. He was introduced and began the practice of Centering Prayer in November of 1995.  He was the coordinator of Contemplative Outreach Canada for the Western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.  The teaching and accompaniment of persons in the method of Centering Prayer was an integral part of his ministry.

Along with his family and friends, Father Raymond will be deeply missed by his parishioners and community. With compassion and dedication, he served the people and the church for 50 years.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private Prayer Service was held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 24, 2021. A private Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 25, 2021, interment followed at St. Albert Catholic Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Fonds Abbé Raymond-Sévigny, La Foundation Franco-Albertaine or to the charity of your choice.
