1935 –2020
It is with profound sadness that the family of William Clarence Shields of St. Albert, Alberta announce his peaceful passing on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at the age of 84 years. Bill will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years Colleen (née Beattie); his three children Jon (Annique), Megan (Dean) and Paul (Michelle); his five grandchildren Madeleine, Félix, Benoît, Julia (Jay) and Owen; his sisters-in-law Pat Shields and Jan Shields; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bill was predeceased by his parents Clarence Shields and Nora Dionne, his brothers Jack and Tom and his sister Betty.
Bill was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta, where he grew up and attended St. Joseph Catholic High School and Alberta College in Edmonton. Bill attended the University of British Columbia where he earned a BCom in 1970. After Bill and Colleen were married in May of 1970, Bill was involved in Adult Education at the Alberta Vocational Centre. Bill finished his MBA in 1973 at the University of Alberta and worked for the Alberta Government in Advanced Education until 1982. Bill then worked as a management consultant until he was appointed as a member of the National Parole Board, where he served from 1993 to 1998. Bill was a member of the Criminal Injury Review Board until 2014. Bill was heavily involved in his community as he served as a St. Albert city councilor, was a St. Albert Catholic School trustee and was Chair of Catholic Social Services Sign of Hope Campaign. Bill had an incredible sense of humour, a sharp wit and loved meeting and talking to people.
Due to restrictions from COVID-19, a private family ceremony will be held in the coming weeks and a celebration of Bill’s life will happen in July 2021.
