1926 – 2022

With great sadness, the family of Lucienne St-Jean, formerly of Legal, announces her passing June 29, 2022 at the age of 96.

She is survived by her children Ronald (Madeleine) of St. Albert, Roger (Jennette) of Invermere B.C., Carmen (Ted) of Calgary and Doris of Busby.  Mémère will also be greatly missed by her grandchildren: Chantal, Marc (Bailey), Kris (Leah), Chelsea (Dave), Melanie (Trent), Lissa (Michael), Graeme (Carol), Nicola, Natalie (John)) and her great-grandchildren: Zoe, Hanna, Bria, Esme, Nathan, Kaitlyn, Aria, Autumn, Rowan, Rhett, Beau, Gabe, Ruth, Owen, Aidan and Logan.

Born and raised near the small village of St-Magloire Québec, she lived, worked and played on the very narrow and very long strip of farmland until the age of 16. School was a time of friends and fun and Mom was quite sad when she had to leave school before graduating in order to remain on the farm. Life was good on the farm but it was hard work.  The only outings of note that the family had was on Sundays when they attended church in St. Magloire after having to walk 5 km one-way in order to be there.

After leaving St. Magloire and the farm, Mom went to work in Welland Ontario.  She worked in a cotton factory, a rope factory where the rope was destined to hold airplane bombs in place, and also a tobacco farm. It was in Welland where she met Lorenzo St-Jean of Legal, Alberta, where he worked at the Ajax Steel Factory also on war-related projects.  Their first date: went to a wrestling match.  They married in 1946 and in 1949, the fledgling family left for Alberta.

Mom, by her calm manner and demeanor, will continue to be an inspiration for all of us. She has successfully instilled in her family a sense of confronting challenges and meeting our obligations, to be industrious and to value our education and our Francophone heritage.

Respecting her wishes, the immediate family will be celebrating her life in a private ceremony.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cross Cancer Institute in her name.  To send condolences, visit www.westlawnmemorial.com.
