Yvonne Mabel Mostyn

Posted

1938 - 2019

Yvonne lost her courageous battle with cancer on November 27, 2019.

She is survived by her husband of over 60 years, Frank; sons: Doug Mostyn and Wayne Mostyn; daughter, Trish Henley; grandchildren: Jenn (Josh),  Kyle (Ken), Michelle (Arthur), Adam, Candase (Cal), Kayla, Darrick and Sarah as well as many other relatives and friends. Yvonne was also the adopted mother and grandmother to so many others.

Yvonne was born in Theodore, Saskatchewan, July 26, 1938, the youngest of a blended family. She took nurses training at the St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon and it was there that Yvonne met Frank, and later married in 1958.

Frank’s military career took them to Europe and across Canada, and as the Matriarch, Yvonne lovingly cared for her family. She and Frank settled in St. Albert in 1978 and after a 17-year career with Youville Home, Yvonne retired in 1994.

Yvonne led a very active and social life: loved to play and watch curling, and cheer on the Edmonton Oilers.

Branch 271 of the Royal Canadian Legion was where she and Frank gathered with friends and enjoyed many activities and events like the meat draw, dinners and dances - always staying until the music was over.

She gave her time in so many ways, including volunteering at Chateau Mission Court for more than 20 years.   She was passionate about helping others: ensuring friends and family had the latest curling schedule; sending along care packages with candy cane cookies and gluten-free brownies to the kids and grandkids in time for Christmas- even all the way to Australia!

Yvonne valued friendships, and treated friends like family - across Canada and Europe. It was important to her to stay in touch- so, she wrote letters, sent out Christmas cards, and more recently enjoyed sending emails and even used Facebook.  Her iPad was never far away, as she would often text or FaceTime with her grandchildren.

There was an extra-special bond between gramma and all her grandkids.

She was a fierce protector- for hers and those she “adopted”

The family would like to thank Dr. Ryan, Laurie and staff at Rivercrest Medical Clinic; Janice M., Case Manager with Home Care; the staff of Sturgeon General Hospital; Cross Cancer Institute as well as Dr. Laing and staff, for their compassionate care of Yvonne.

Respecting her wishes, there will be no funeral. Cremation has taken place. The immediate family will gather and celebrate her life at a later date. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all.
