LETTER: A startling realization

"And that was the moment my wildest dream became reality wherein I realized the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford no less, is a man who actually “walks the talk” while our Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, is a man who only “talks – then walks”! Who would have ever thought?"

I’m writing to tell you the New Year brought me something I would never have thought of even in my wildest dreams. It’s the mind-boggling realization that I respect the Premier of Ontario more than the Premier of Alberta.

Both are conservatives and their neoliberal political philosophy is similar – albeit it's one I don’t share. Both are shy to spend money to fight the coronavirus, when the pandemic’s health and economic impacts demand bold spending initiatives such as taken by our federal government. But recent events have shown a marked difference between Doug Ford and Jason Kenney. Each premier had a cabinet minister take a foreign vacation during times of provincial lock downs, neither minister showing good judgment or personal leadership. Ford’s reaction was to admit his misstep in not prohibiting his minister’s trip, and then accepting the minister’s resignation. Kenney’s reaction was to blame his minister’s misstep on poor communication clarity, and then do nothing.

And that was the moment my wildest dream became reality wherein I realized the Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford no less, is a man who actually “walks the talk” while our Premier of Alberta, Jason Kenney, is a man who only “talks – then walks”! Who would have ever thought?

David Merritt, St. Albert
