LETTER: COVID-19 and masks

Why are people against wearing masks? According to science they decrease the spread of COVID-19. If everyone wore a mask, there is a good chance that small businesses and schools could stay open. If you do not believe in science, why do you use a computer, fly in an airplane or use a battery drill? These are all technological developments based on science.

As our knowledge of science improves, our behaviour and interpretation changes. As an example, our view of the atom has changed over the years. Initially it was thought that the atom was indivisible. Now we realize it is composed of protons, electrons, and neutrons. Proton and neurons which account for most of the mass of an atom was not originally thought to be at the centre of the atom. Scientists came to the conclusion that electrons zipping around the nucleus do not fall into the nucleus because they obey quantum not classical physics. What I am saying as we become more knowledgeable, our opinion changes. Dr.Tam initially gave advice based on what was known. As the knowledge of COVID-19 improved, so did her advice. She was following science. The vaccine was allowed to be developed so quickly because of our better understanding of Messenger-RNA.

You are not protecting freedom by not wearing masks. Freedom is not harming others by doing anything you want. By not wearing a mask you increase the chance of someone else obtaining COVID-19. By the way, you cannot enter someone’s house without their permission or drive when you are buzzed or drunk or drive over the speed limit. Because of you not wearing masks, nurses are breaking down and crying because of the workload and doctors are totally exhausted. Shame on you if you approve of spitting at a hotel worker as in Nelson, B.C., or beating up a Walmart employee in Dawson Creek, B.C.. They were just doing their jobs by asking individuals to wear masks. Those who refuse to wear masks when required to do so are simply selfish bullies who care only about themselves. I am not talking about those who cannot wear masks because of medical reasons and have a doctor’s certificate.

Some really good material Monty Python would have are using hydroxyquinoline to treat COVID-19 or denying that combustion of fossil fuels creates climate change. Proof exists that it does and at least 95 per cent of climatologists say it does. Perhaps we should have been more attuned to what other countries did such as New Zealand to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Wearing masks would not be good material for Monty Python.
