Our society needs more community groups like Active Communities.

To quote the Gazette, this new project “is an opportunity for St. Albert to be a leader in innovative recreational facility opportunities and improve the health of our community coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Covered refrigerated ice rinks on concrete pads will be a vast improvement on the current natural rinks situated around St Albert. Refrigeration will allow the community to enjoy skating outside longer as the ice will not be dependent on weather. Having a Zamboni to resurface the ice between uses will ensure a higher quality of ice, removing ruts and increasing the level of safety for skaters.

This community infrastructure will be one of the few outdoor facilities that can be enjoyed year around by the community, regardless of age or sport. In the cooler months, ice sports. In the warmer months, the concrete pads allow this site to be used by ball hockey, pickleball, fitness classes etc.

This past winter has reintroduced people to the joy of recreation outside! This facility will give sports leaders the opportunity to be active year-round imparting the ABC (agility, balance and co-ordination) FUNdamentals of sports through a cross training in different activities.

Janice Foster, St. Albert
