LETTER: Proposal to remove protected status from Riverlot 56 raises questions

"Are there other unstated criteria for its inclusion among the sites to be delisted?"

Bas Delaney's letter ("On Riverlot 56, why fix what's not broken?", Aug. 26 Gazette) regarding the proposed removal of protected status for the Riverlot 56 Natural area is a wake-up call for all area residents who benefit from this local treasure.

As a long-time and frequent wanderer of the Riverlot trails, I have met walkers, birders and skiers from all over the Capital Region and beyond. The property is in Morinville-St. Albert MLA Dale Nally's constituency and I would hope that he could represent to Minister Nixon that a very large number of his constituents do not want Riverlot 56 to lose its protected status under any pretext.

As Mr. Delaney has ably pointed out in his letter, the Riverlot is neither expensive nor underutilized. Are there other unstated criteria for its inclusion among the sites to be delisted?

Andy Smith, St. Albert
