Neighbourhoods not created equal at tax time

Recently, average tax increases for St. Albert neighbourhoods were released by the city. For those folks who thought their taxes might go down, don't hold your breath. We know that the average tax increase was just over 5 per cent, but not all neighbourhoods are created equal.

These neighbourhoods had increases above the average: North Ridge 6.7 per cent, Lacombe Park 5.24 per cent, Mission 12.75 per cent, Oakmont 6.64 per cent, Braeside 6.65 per cent, Kingswood 5.33 per cent and Grandin 5.03 per cent.

These were below: Deer Ridge 3.19 per cent, Erin Ridge 4.54 per cent, Inglewood 4.56 per cent, Woodlands 4.4 per cent, Forest Lawn 3.93 per cent, Sturgeon 4.48 per cent, Pineview 3.88 per cent, Akinsdale 4.26 per cent and Heritage Lakes 3.18 per cent. But, these are averages only and your increase may vary based on your property assessment.

Your property assessment determines the taxes you pay. The assessments are based on data from the prior year, in this case mid-2008. If you think your assessment is wrong you can choose to appeal it.
