St. Albert bowls over cancer

Only a few months ago, an idea was suggested by our son Jaden to hold a Bowl-A-Thon to raise funds to support cancer research. Our son called it “cancer bowling.” His idea was not only welcomed, but embraced by the management at the St.

Only a few months ago, an idea was suggested by our son Jaden to hold a Bowl-A-Thon to raise funds to support cancer research.

Our son called it “cancer bowling.” His idea was not only welcomed, but embraced by the management at the St. Albert Bowling Centre, fellow bowling mom Liza Sunley, numerous St. Albert-and-area businesses, and wonderful support through the St. Albert Gazette.

The event, Strikes for Cancer, was held Sunday, May 24 where friends, family, and the community came together with a common goal to strike down cancer with their bowling balls, and of course to have some fun. We have been humbled by the generosity and support by those that became involved with this event.

As a result, we are pleased to share that over $7,500 will be contributed to the Canadian Cancer Society to fight this terrible disease.

From this experience three things came to light. One, never underestimate ideas and the will of a child; two, the closeness and support in our community is a privilege that should be celebrated every day; and three, Strikes for Cancer will be even a bigger and better event in 2010!
