Second for lady Wolves

The Morinville Wolves finished second for the first time in three consecutive finals at the Louis St. Laurent Green & Gold Classic.

The defending 3A provincial champion Wetaskiwin Sabres stopped the three-peat bid by the lady Wolves in the 61-45 win Saturday.

The Wolves trailed 20-18 at halftime and fell behind by eight points entering the fourth quarter.

Makayla Attfield, a tournament all-star, scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against the Sabres.

Abagail Davey finished with 21 points and six rebounds.

The semifinal was 58-32 against the Holy Rosary Raiders of Lloydminster as Felica Davies, a Grade 10 post, led the Wolves with 17 points and 14 rebounds.

The tournament opener was 77-43 against St. Joseph of Grande Prairie. Davey and Jordan Hessell potted 20 points apiece and Nadi Carter pulled off six steals.

The North Central zone champions the last two years and the 2019 3A provincial consolation winners are 6-3 this season.

Morinville men fall short

A shorthanded squad of Morinville Wolves finished the Louis St. Laurent Green & Gold Classic as the men’s consolation finalists.

Without two starters because of injuries and another with sickness, the Wolves went 1-2 with the team’s Grade 10 and 11 players logging lots of floor time.

The host Louis St. Laurent Barons, a metro Edmonton division three team, edged the Wolves 65-64 in Saturday’s consolation final.

The downfall for the Wolves was their outside shooting at 33 per cent.

Matthew Osunde contributed 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists and Carter Rousseau added 15 points.

Osunde, the MVP at the Rise Up tournament at Sturgeon Composite High School for the championship-winning Wolves, was the team's tournament all-star.

The first game for the Wolves was the 54-52 loss to St. Joseph of Grande Prairie.

A below-average shooting game at 35 per cent prevented the Wolves from winning the winnable game.

Osunde recorded 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

The next game was 87-58 against the Edwin Parr Predators of Athabasca as the Wolves shot 47 per cent from the field.

Leading the way with a triple double was Osunde with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists.

Russ Foisy tacked up 16 points and Rousseau added 14.

The Wolves enter the Christmas break with six wins in nine games.
